Hello everyone,
I am having hard time starting motor lately. Ran pony for 20 minutes today without any luck. Block was plenty warm, primar pump gauge was in the green, and injector rack was not stuck because I could vary fuel injector output by watching exhaust which would chang white to black. Still no start even with ether. When running it runs fine, just cant get there. Help. Whats next? Thanks for any help.

I don't know if this will help. My 5T done the same thing to me. I dis-engaged the clutch to the pony motor and it took right off. I had an old D6 that you had to dis-engage the clutch on the pony as well. If its rolling black smoke I would think that the diesel is running, and your pony just isn't dis-engaging. No expert, but thats my two cents. Does your pony riv when you throttle it up? Something to check.

Thanks for suggestion Ken
I dont think pony disengagement is a problem because it has not bee in past. As soon as main hit it would kick out, but I will try that tomorrow.
Thanks again Bob

Our 212 grader is the same way as Ken's stuff. If you get some black smoke and the pony sounds like it's having a very easy time turning it, try disengaging the clutch and see what happens.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

Thanks ccjersey
while cranking motor with black smoke rolling, pony still sounds like it is under load. Having said that, I will still try your suggestion. I am at a loss.

Bob - Your pony may not be reaching full RPM, and thereby not reaching critical main engine cranking speed. It's difficult to tell by ear, whether a main has adequate cranking speed to light off.
Diesels rely on a cranking speed that is fast enough to generate ignition by compression, and if that cranking speed is down by even 50 RPM .. it may sound like the cranking speed is adequate, but it's not. You might be well advised to measure pony and main cranking speeds to see if they are down.
When the weather turns cold, it doesn't take much of a slight drop-off, of any one factor, to create the conditions where a main engine refuses to fire.

I had even thought of that and was even going to get my digital tach but ran out of time. I know carb is not just right, will use tach and check it out.
Thanks Bob

Make sure the compression release is all the way to "start".

I have moved compression release in and out many times and no difference. Put new valve cover gasket on not too long ago and looked at linkage. All seemed to be ok. Stalled motor the other day and pull started it. Barely got maim clutch engaged and was suprised how quick it started.first time I had pull started. Will look compression release over again.
Thanks Bob
