Just returned home with my newest aquisition, a D311 Electric set. Had to battle the snow a bit but made it in one piece. It appears to be in pretty good condition, looks like it needs a new coupler. Does anyone know how many Kilowatt these units are rated for? I think it will make a great addition to the 112 2M grader & the D4 7U dozer. I haven't got a serial number yet it was too dark & snowing too heavy. Where would the serial number be located?

catcrazy - The D311 genset is rated at 21KW for 12 hours at .8 Power Factor, and it runs at 1200 RPM.
It weighs 2760 lbs, and has a S/N commencing at 4V5001. This unit was built between 1947 and 1959.
The S/N tag should be in the same place as on your crawler .. on the left upper rear of the block, behind the pony controls.

Is there any way to find out what manual I need for this unit if the serial number tag is missing? Can see where the serial number tag was riveted on to the side of the block, but it is gone. Also if any one has pictures of what the coupler between the engine & the generator looks like would be greatly appreciated.

Check along the vertical pan mounting flange just under the fuel transfer pump.
Should be stamped there.

Generator coupling should look like this:

Look where the plate was riveted on and usually the SN is also stamped in the casting so maybe you,ll have to scrape the paint away to see it if it,s covered up.If the one you have has the injection housing on the left it probably is a 4V Gen. set and they started at 4V 5001 SN and up. They were the same D311 used in the D2 4U & 5U tractors.

Also sand or scrape the paint away where the tag was on the engine and see if it wasn't stamped into the block before the tag was put on.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Talked to caterpillar about coupler & they said that it was discontinued, so unless someone has a used one that they want to part with it looks like I may have to go to after market unit. If anyone has information on what is needed for an after market coupler please let me know, if not I'm sure that my local bearing & drive dealer can figure something out. Its just that I would much rather stay with OEM equipment if possible.

What's wrong with the coupler on your set?

You might get lucky and find one that someone used the engine for a tractor or something or is being scrapped.

How much HP does the D311 produce? I'm trying to match up an after market coupler & I need this information for the bearing & drive guys.

21kW/.745kW/hp=28 hp

~45kW (rated hp @ 1525 rpm) X 1200 rpm generator speed/1525 = 35hp, but this method should underestimate hp since torque peak is at about 1000 rpm for that engine.

So something less than 40 hp should give you a margin for error. I expect there are also multipliers built into the selection of a coupling for use on a diesel engine, so you may wind up with an oversized $$$ coupling. You might just use 28 hp and call it right unless you are planning to put a bunch of hours on it.

Clutch and pto dealers might be a source for a coupling made specifically for connecting to a flywheel.

My rack setting charts show a maximum of 52 hp @ 2000 rpm for the 7S5001-up industrial engine and 50.5 hp at 1800 rpm for the 4V5001-up gen set both including fan.
