Cowboy, MB. Cat hooks up the heaters as shown in the two photos linked below. I plan on doing the same to my D47U when I can get to it.

Looks like a pretty easy installation except for drilling and tapping the head of the pony 1/2" NPT. The other end attaches to the lower radiator supply at the tapped hole that is already there.

These are John's (MB. Cat) photos.

I have several Kats that seem to work OK.

On the "U" models it's more common to run a circulation circuit from the flange on the side of the thermostat housing to the pipe plug fitting on the lower radiator pipe.....no taping required.

OM, That looks like it would be even simpler. I was wondering if that would work. Looks like all one would have to do is drill a hole in the flange cover plate and weld a coupling to the plate or even a short nipple for that matter.

On my 7U I ran a hose from the plug on the lower radiator hose to the drain vent on the top of the starting engine. The water circulates nicely through both engines.

That will work to.....but be sure to check either approach to see that the pony cylinder area is getting heat and not plugged up with the usual sediment😊 😊

The last 7U that I bought has an inline heater plumbed from the lower pipe to the left side of the block, right behind the governor.

Today I installed a " Kat " brand heater on my D2... will attach to the engine side panel with a U-bolt. I ran the heater long enough to insure that it worked, but not long enough to really warm the engines.
Because I'm adding direct electric start for the diesel engine, and don't have glow plugs, I thought it would help with the first startup of the day.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
