Yes hello all! I’m doing a 24 volt change over in a 3t D7. Gear lash on generator drive ? New alternator set up goes from zero to quite real loose?

I'm not aware of an actual spec for the back lash other than a statement " it is the responsibility of the user to assure there is some" and the owner is responsible for damage due to lack thereof. I just go by feel to see that there is a small amount of back lash clearance throughout the generator/alternator rotation.

Made the install of the alternator drive case . Made a gasket instead of rtv. Got just a little backlash , and snugged her down .
The old girl spun right over with the 24 volt starter conversion ! Now on to other tweeks.

to check the backlash you could use plasti-guage. its made for checking clearances on big end and main bearings etc. designed for engine rebuilding with out fancy bore gauges and micrometers and dial guages which also happen to be fragile.
how it works is you cut small piece of the roll and place it on the bearing surface tighten the bolts to spec the remove the cap and compare the now crushed cord to the marking on the packet.
to do gear back lash you would have to stick it in place with a smear of grease and then turn the crank so it would crush and the roll it back. unless there was a access cover you could remove the get easier access.
i read some where 2 thou is a rough rule for most gears.
