D2 Pony governor lube????

More

My D2 5U has a stuck pony governor. Really stuck, even with a tap hammer and lots of PB Blaster the lever wont move. I took a governor off of a parts D2, so I am OK, but I cant figure out how to lubricate or check the oil in the governor. My 5U manual does not even mention oil in the governor and my 3J manual seems to say you have to dis-assemble the unit to add oil. Is there something that I am missing?        I dont want the replacement to go bad from lack of oil.                                         Thanks Guys.    Grant.

Hi Grantj,
The instructions sat to take out one of the 4 screws and pump 2 or 3 squirts from an oil can in and replace the ecrew.

Hope this helps

i am sure you only need to remove one screw and use oil can to lube .- 2 Tablespoons of oil

I saw a mention of that in a 3J manual, but no photo. I took the screws out of the other end and could not get oil to go in. Now I understand. . The old story of "A picture is worth a thousand words".
It wont help the one I took off. The shaft that the control lever is on is stuck and wont budge.

I am lucky that I have a parts machine laying around. Thanks a lot, Grant.

I looked at 5 different manuals today. Three actual Cat books , one Jensales and another repo that I dont recall the name. The three Cat books each had a little bit different wording about the governor and surprisingly the Jensales had the best description. I had always thought Jensales were just repos of cat books, but there must be more D2 books out there than I know about because it was a little different wording than the other three actual Cat books. Just another mystery in Catworld. Grant.

The part I don't understand about that oiling advice from Cat is how any oil gets to the other end of the governor, where there are more parts that could do with lubrication. Perhaps they rely on it running down there when the machine is on an angle. When I assembled the 5U's governor, I put extra oil in that end cover and more than a tablespoon in the pulley end.

Cheers,

I agree, it seems like the design team forgot to make maintenance easy. I hope to get mine back on today and see how it responds. Thanks all Grant.

how any oil gets to the other end of the governor ? - Centrifugal Force by the governor arms would push oil to the other end
