An "is it worth it" question - D6B (not currently running) for $2500 in NY

Buddy has a work colleague whose father has a D6B that hasn't run "for a few years". I looked at this one last year or so and at the time, we thought that maybe the starter motor was toasted because it was directly inline with the adjacent building's roof downspout. The whole tractor looks generally in good shape (we'll take another look tomorrow) but I've heard that the hydraulic pump is not obtainable (maybe none of the meaningful parts are either). The cylinder head looks like it has the decompressor lever sticking out the back so I was thinking to at least see if I could get the engine to turn. It's probably scrap price at least and it's not far from town. Thoughts?

Cheers,
Neil

Hello Neil, My D6B was originally from New York State. The original owner said his Caterpillar salesman told him that he was not sure that the “new fangled” direct electric start option would be able to handle the local cold winter temperatures. He decided to go with what he thought was the more reliable “pony” engine starter. Unfortunately, the D6B starting engine was the new “buzz-bomb” high rpm type that quickly became infamous for failures! If this D6B diesel engine turns okay it is easy to convert it to electric start. The main problem is mounting a 24V alternator. The original generator is no longer available. The hydraulic pump should not be a problem if proper care is taken.

Thanks Craig, this one's original electric start so all of that is ok (unless the starter motor needs to be replaced) Do you think that price is ok? Seems like basically scrap price (what does this thing weigh? It has a blade and a winch I think)

Kind of difficult to guess on value without pictures. Got any that you can post?

Hi Neil, going price in my area for scrap price is $105.00/ton which is considered unprepared iron price, bare tractor I believe is 22,000lbs. Add a blade and a winch probably around another 8,000lbs so 30,000lbs price might be a little high.

Righto thanks Clayton, especially since I don't know (yet) what state it's in, whether the main engine turns (owner says it doesn't start which could mean many things). I'm going to take a look at it today to see if I can get any clues into its health

We took a look and the deal is that it's a late 44A with a tilt blade, manual transmission. The fellow said that he had the engine rebuilt, used it some, parked it beside his shed for 2 years and then "it wouldn't start". We checked it over and the engine is seized. The owner said he drained gallons of water out of it and didn't find any oil. We pulled the starter out and put a bar in there and could not budge the flywheel. So since it has a decompressor on it, my buddy will go back and fill it up with ATF/diesel via the exhaust pipe - two or three gallons until it won't take any more, on the assumption that the pistons/rings are stuck. It could be the crank as well so the engine might require a full disassembly / rebuild to get it back into operation.
Is it a D330? and are engine rebuild parts available for it?

Cheers,
Neil

D330 is a four cylinder engine I think the D6 would be six cylinders which would make it a D333.
If the crank has been submerged in water then there will be water marks on it so it will at least need a grind.

Hi Phil, yes I did a couple more searches and see that it's a D333. A place online has an engine rebuild kit for 1500 (cylinder kits, bearings and gaskets/seals so if I had a shed to put it in, for 5k it could be running again. Tracks aren't great but are serviceable. Everything else on it looks good, no leaks anywhere, blade has seen some work but no surprise after 60 years.
Serial # is 44A10413. Couldn't make out the hydraulic control number. What year would this be, and how far through the D6B model range would it be?

Do not overlook damage from Freezing especially knowing it had water in multiple locations.
Might change the whole picture.
