Hi I am new here.  We just purchased a new to us d 7 17A.  My father had the same machine when we were kids.  I am trying to find out what year and model this is. its a 4 cylinder hydralic.  The ser number is 17A 3704.   Milton cat said it was to old for them to have any information.  I am also looking for knew knobs for the control levers.  The machine runs excellent

thanks in advance.

Welcome, the serial number book says 3704 was built in 1956, your Cat Dealer should have the knobs, get yourself a parts number book off fleabay, it will be cheap, that will help you source the parts easier.

Welcome aboard Rich,
Your D7 17A non-turbo(D7C) was produced 1955 to 1959. The books you need are in the ACMOC library. You need to be a paying MEMBER not just a USER to access them. They are also available on eBay.
The book you need the most is the Operation and Maintenance Instructions(OMI):

BTW, there is an excellent metal model of the D7C (I bought one) available on both Amazon and eBay for $99.99.

The last time I wanted new control lever handles and didn't have part numbers on hand, I just asked my local Caterpillar dealer to look up steering clutch levers for a D7G, that was still a current machine on their parts data base so they had no trouble finding them.

Hi, woodyorion.
Welkum too ther 4um and congrats on your purchase.

Often when you go to a Cat dealer for parts for these 'veterans', you need to ask them to look in the 'Classic Cats' section of their parts files.

That said, Cat apparently got it pretty right when they designed their control knobs and handles way back when 'cos they haven't changed much if at all.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

I found the owners/operator manual online at the vintage tractor site. CRS keeps me from posting the link but it is a pdf and 8MB.

Sk21's reply has it in this post on AGTALK......    CRS had a lapse
