INJECTORS

INJECTORS was created by Floyd Green
I believe I have an injector problem. My old 1940s D8-8R was showing signs of an injector problem so I shut it down and went home to get my books. CAT parts book (8R and up) says I need a 6B2846 injector. Problem is, I would like to at least attempt an injector fix before finding another injector. In the "Diesel D8 tractor Service Instruction booklet (bottom pg 49) I found a description of a method of cleaning the spray end with a "blunt piece of wood" and to  'clean the fuel discharge hole with a 5B1401 cleaning tool". The "piece of wood is of course easy but whats up with the cleaning tool? Is this "Tool" a brush? Might I use a very small piece of wire or a very small drill bit turned by hand?  How about a small brush like the dentist gives you to clean between your teeth? Anybody out there got any ideas?

Floyd,
I did some quick research, by the part number you have for the tool, I came up with the following;

Also known as a cutting tip cleaner, you can get one at a welding supply store.

Thanks folks, now I can get back to work! Something here I did not say is just how far back in some very rough country the afflicted D8 is. Ten miles of very rough dirt road past end of pavement. The scenery could not be better and I get to drive the 1944 Dodge WC63 way down into a virgin wilderness canyon so its not all bad. because of the above conditions I need to get this done in one trip if possible so I will take a second injector with me in case the "repair job" on the one I brought out is a no-go. I'm pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to remove the afflicted injector. I hope it goes back as easy. Thanks again.

Good luck with it.

I'd be interested to see some pictures of the environment you are working in, and some pictures of the D8 too.

I cleaned up the injector and it did improve to the point I went back to work and built some more road. The D8 engine had been building a little heat before but not now. Thanks again for the info. When my wife gets back in town (she's a pilot) in a couple days I'll post a few pictures as (I forget why) it takes both our computers to accomplish sending photos.

The plot thickens! I did get the D8 back to work and promptly got it stuck as it slid sideways on a hidden lava cap rock. Not much of a slide but it was enough. I was filling a ravine and the nose slid down into the loose fill. As soon as I hit the clutch in reverse I knew I was in trouble as I just dug in. That downhill, monster 14 ft. wide blade with it's equally heavy U-shaped support (I forget what it's called) together weight so much that the dozer tracks hit dirt only on the front and instantly dig in as opposed to blade uphill on steep terrain where your tracks contact ground for their full length. As the dozer leaned downhill into the soft fill the blade stayed on top of the fill (as it is a cable blade set-up) until the blades lifting blocks touched as the blade settled in. So, backwards is out of the question as nothing to anchor to and blade dug in. Only option is straight downhill. There is an adequate bench only two or three tractor lengths downhill. Zero dozer movement with blade on so dropped blade. Had to go get eight foot cheater bar for that fun task. The downhill side of the dozer needed to be dug out as the soil is at the top of and through) the track for its entire length. This is soil mixed with buck brush. No simple or easy way to dig through that to get to the bolts holding the blade/u-support to the track frame. The space between the arms of the blade frame allowed me to rotate the D8 just enough to rotate it downhill. I've gotten to the point where all the chains, come-along winches, shovels, etc. are mostly set up to the point where I can re-attach the blade arms. Blade needs to move approx two feet. I want somebody else there when I do this as I need to get under the steeply downhill pointing nose of the D8 between it and the blade/frame to start pumping the jacks up under the blade to get it out of the soil so it can be winched two feet to the side. I figure one more day (with a friends help) I will be back to building road. I've been taking pics. which I will post when job completed.

Floyd,
Sounds like a precarious situation you have found yourself in. I hope you can navigate your way out of it safely. I will be eagerly awaiting your pictures, sounds like unforgiving conditions you are working in there.

Glad to hear you are back in action on this project. A while back you were complaining about being too old and the D8 being too far gone. Hoping to get my 1H D8 going again.
