Hello, I recently bought a 1957 D4 Traxcavator. Runs great, has a leak that I am trying to track down a seal for. Parts book wasn't much help.
The seal in question is the one underneath the hydraulic controls in the picture.
Thanks

My guess is out of the hydraulic control, by the picture. That is in a different book than the tractor. But I don't know my Cat hydraulics to tell you what book you need. So you need more help than I can give you, but other should be along soon. So welcome. As all most all knowledge about Cats shows up here, your in the right spot.

Here is an old thread that may help.

Thanks, looks like a seal that will be pretty easy to find if the D2 and D4 use the same part number.
Here are a couple pictures of the machine. Had just looked at a smaller Cletrac and then a Massey 2244 when I stumbled upon this. Motor is pretty fresh, UC is in pretty good shape as well. I bought it to clear some stumps on some land, it does a great job. Going to build a ROPS (if you can call it that, operator enclosure) and fix a couple little things here and there.

that seal is available cant tell you the part number though my hydrualics book is for a different model.
you should be able to cross match to a generic seal by taking the old one into any decent bearing or industrial supplier.

The No. 44 Hydraulic Control Parts Catalog, form 32856, show the seal as J2382. The original was a double lip seal which are NLA. That is still a good number.
There is room for 2 of that seal on the shaft.
McMaster Carr has Spedi Sleeves that will work on the shaft (1.27" - 1.123" diameter).
You do have to open the case to replace the seal and will need gasket 4F4217.

Welcome aboard brokestroke! The ACMOC library has several No 44 hydraulic system parts books that your D4 could have used. Please post your tractors S/N so I know which one to look in for you.
You might want to consider becoming a paying "member" not just a "user." That would give you access to the quarterly ACMOC magazine and the library. The is much to see in the library such as the 32 page D4 sales brochure. Here's a picture of the cover to get you curious.

Don't let the control shaft drop down or you will bugger up the detent mechanism.
There is a Service Bulletin upgrade.....The single seal has been replaced by the use of two seals.
