I have a couple marine d333 engines can only find 6 digit serial. 80B631 what year etc? The boat s suposed to be 68 . Thanks

I'm not exactly a 'walking serial # encyclopedia' but I suspect that the one number that you have quoted could well be for an early engine in that series. The other engine should have a different serial #. It was not uncommon back in the day for Cat serial #s to have less than 6 characters in the early part of a run - or MORE than 6 characters in longer runs. Several models made it into the10, 20 and 30 thousands and at least one made it into the 40 thousands.

Ok, well I’ll have to get the other number and see what that may tell me., im told there 200hp. They are turbo and aftercooled, they have the low profile exchanger coolant tank as well as the low profile aftercooler ( don’t come above the valve cove) as they are under the salon floor. The boat was built in Germany if that helps with the serial numbers.
Trying to get as close to the right age of the engines as I can for obvious parts reasons etc.
so when I get back down there I’ll get the numbers off the other, so less than 8 isn’t too uncommon.. ok good cuz that engine don’t have any more, the stamped number should be right there near the tag on these? Gotta find that to verify. Also been told the have been gone through, any way to check with Cat? As long as the guy used genuine Cat parts I suppose,? The boats been setting for some time in a boat shed, dry as a bone. Plan to get her going, they pop off and run at least.

Some photos might help too, if you can, might give some of the 'cluier' people here a better idea of what you are dealing with. 'Sides' there are a LOTTTTA photo vampires here.

I was always on the 'front' side of the u-f-em-we-fix-em' equation and have never considered myself a mechanic but there are some very knowledgeable people on this forum if we can just get their attention.

That's a 4-1/2" bore engine commonly used in 1960 to about 1980 Marine and similar Industrial engines. I don't have yearly production numbers but that shouldn't matter when it come to ordering parts based on using the correct serial number Parts Manual.

Is there anyway to find out what the horsepower rating would’ve been by the serial number. I don’t have a good picture of it yet. I only got a couple of odd pictures. I gotta get back down to the boat I’ll take some better pictures, but this is what I have.

Am I correct in that the 333 up till the d33C were 5,5 stroke? I’m assuming mine are. When did that change, I’ve remand 68, but I’m assuming late in the year ,and since mine appear to be first run 68, not, how does one figure set hp from serial no? Or another way?

Yes, stroke is 5.5" up to the D333C when it changed to 6" along with a larger bore of 4-3/4". The phase out began in about 1968 and eventually became the 3306 about 1973.
As far as set up for the engine you need to access the Rack Setting Charts for that engine. It will tell you the Turbo boost pressure, governor settings, Rack settings and and other specific requirements based on engine arrangement and s/n.
