Guys I have a CAT D8 14A with a seal leak on the outside of the sprocket on the final drive shaft. I have tried to wiggle the sprocket with a 6 ft bar and there is no wiggle. It looks like I need new sprocket seals. Does anyone know of a good repair shop in the Bakersfield, ca area for these old machines. The young guys in my Ventura County shops are not familiar with these old machines where they start with a pony motor. Any inputs would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Phil Cooper

Have you tried Quinn Caterpillar yet? That should be a no brainer for them, pony or not;
How bad is your seal leak? If it sits from lack of use and makes a few drops, that is one thing; if it "pukes" a lot out, it truly needs attention.
Some folks get by the minimal leaks by adding some track lube to the final drives. It will solidify after cooling down. JM

Reminds me of the dealer I just had the pickup serviced at. They told me "it has an oil leak" after spilling oil over what seems like half the engine and up the firewall....

Cheers,

Yes Neil: You should look into that. Lol.
I know the feeling.
The best diesel mechanics around here will fix more than what was asked of them, unless specifically told to leave anything alone. If it is an expensive repair or questionable, they call for permission before proceeding. JM

old trick with slasher and water winch(travelling irrigator) gearboxes make a porridge of oil and grease especially grease fortified with molybdenum disulphide, often "fixes" that oil leak to weep as they dont turn that fast its not a big deal. the moly tends to "stick" to the parts even if the grease is gone.

Guys thanks for the replys. My 14A leaks more than a few drops when setting for maybe a month, loses about 1/3 of reservoir of 90-140 lube & loses about same amount after operating for 6-8 hours. How much track lube should I add to the reservoir? I have had same experiences with 3T D7, 17A D7 and 977K.  I ran a 2U, for 10 years acquired from Corp of Engineers and never had that problem. I don't have the seal p/n . This is an excellent machine as we put a new crankshaft in it about 10 years ago.

Hi Cooper, gemdozer has a point. Did you jack the tractor up or make sure the sprocket was over a low spot?
 I think the seals need to be replaced or you could try some of methods in the replies.
These are the pages from my D8 14A O.M.I.
