Hi, I just found this club and I think its probably the perfect place to ask about a 15A D8 that I am working on. My customer left it at a show and it flooded and froze the right hand steering clutch solid so he hired me to remove it and rebuild it. He has the service manual and parts manual but I am having a hard time finding the lining for the steering brake band. CAT says it is discontinued but they can get almost everything else. The P/N that is shown for the lining is 1H-6172 for a QTY of 13. I was able to source the rivets to install the lining on the band. If anyone knows where to get the lining or anywhere to make the lining please let me know. Thank you! I have a huge passion for these machines and want to see this one keep running!

Get acquainted with Machinerytrader.com.....https://www.machinerytrader.com/parts/search?PartNumber=1H-6172&SearchType=Start
Also a good clutch/brake shop may be able to supply.

I see that you are in a 707 area code. There is a place in Sacramento that will reline just about anything. Is the metal part of the band badly rusted? That can mean a bigger problem.

I just looked thru my notes (Capital Clutch and Brake) Sacramento Calif. Good Luck with it, Grant

Yes, Capitol Clutch and Brake should be able to reline or supply materials. The best counter person there of 12+/- is named "BT". Vince is the owner, and I think if anyone gets stumped, they stroll over to his office for fatherly advice.
You might even ask one of the salesmen from ACME Rigging and Supply (Ukiah) if they have any recommendations. They service many folks with logging equipment with cables, cutting edges, etc; one of their field salespeople might know of someone close by.
I have a mechanic from Colusa County that may be able to reline them; he generally does brake band relines for the local dealers, but not sure if he has friction materials for the larger CATs.
Another option is ask "Piggy Smith's" aka FPSmith in Cordelia (Fairfield) or General Gear in Boise, ID.
Good luck and happy wrenching. JM

Hi Frews, you might want to consider becoming a paying member. That would allow you to access the ACMOC tech library. The library contains very many manuals and is continuously growing. I'm planning to submit several more D7 and D8 manuals in the near future.
