I just acquired a Cat 941B with clam shell loader bucket. Good side is it was free! But, there is a hole in the block where a rod went through. The pins on the bucket/clam shell are all nice, no slop anywhere. I know nothing of this machine. Can somebody tell me where I might find the serial #s? Looks to be very little (if anything) wrong with this machine otherwise. I took a quick look at the eng. removal/replacement prospects and was very encouraged. Can somebody give me a clue as to what a replacement eng. might cost? For those curious, the next door neighbor bought this machine and hired a young guy to run it. Young guy never checked fluids until it stopped. Disgusted neighbor gave it to me and I just needed to tow it home behind my D8r. Great timing as I'm just putting my two D8r dozers up for sale as I'm getting too old to run them. This 941 looks like what this old man needs. The older I get the more I like hydraulics.

Wouldn't that machine have the serial tag on the right side of the dash in front of the pedal and back end left side on frame? That would be a nice one if it was running.

As soon as I get out the door I will check these locations. It would be a nice one for me. It will be just what I need when I get it running. Until I see the #s on this machine I have no idea what eng. resides therein. But, with your hint of a 3304 as a possibility I will begin chasing prices for. Thank you much juiceman.

No # by pedal. Big counter weight (for bucket) across rear of machine covers area where I would expect to find the # tag. Big cast #s on right side of block say 5S5300 and just below these #s is " -35- ".

My 941B has a 3304 engine---but it is 200 miles away to look at it or my manuals

Go to the left side of the engine block then, near the firewall. JM

I removed the left side eng. cover and found that the buckets lifting arms totally cover any access. Tomorrow i get out the mirrors.

s/n would have to be an 80H3884-up to have the 3304 engine.

Thanks again folks, I found it where shown on "engine" picture (thanks old magnet) shown above. It is very difficult to see or access and the stamping on the tag was poorly done as it was very light even after sanding with steel wool. Tag said "track type loader" on the bottom and "80?1822"along the top.. The ? appears to be the bottom of the letter "H". Just below the tag "1622" is cast into the block. I could possibly use a dye grinder to remove the rivets holding the tag to the block. Looking through a half inch gap between hoses is not easily done so hopefully this is enough. If not I will remove tag for better look. Thanks again

You have enough info there for the serial number - 80H1822. Back in those days, Cat used a number, either single digit in the early days or double digit later on, along with a letter as the prefix to the serial number to denote which model that particular machine was/is.

Sometimes, all a changed prefix denoted was a change in the process on the assembly line, as is pretty much the case with the 2F and 1J Cat 22 tractors.
