I recently got my D2 5U tailseat Cat running. Yesterday a Parts manual arrived but it doesnt answer some questions that I have. This Cat is a very late model (serial # 18314) and is the long frame, 5 roller bottom. I cant figure out how to tell if it has the oil main clutch or a dry clutch. The manual is no help on this. Is there some outward sign to look for that would tell? Also is the 5 roller bottom standard on the long frame D2s? 

  It does have a transmission group number on the data plate, but I cant find any reference to that either. (group # 3667) 
  It also has solid idlers, but the parts manual does not mention them either. 

           Runs great, looks pretty good other than the bottom of the fenders have been backed into some solid things.

The outward sign of an oil clutch on the d2 is, a dipstick on the clutch cover just to the left of the square access cover.
A proper parts catalog for your serial number will have all those parts in it, many will be listed under attachments, such as the big idlers.
Pictures are needed to tell you more about your track frames, all the later D2s had longer four roller track frames standard, and usually ones with five roller frames were modified with loader track frames, although I have a similar serial # D2 with standard length (longer for late model) track frames with five rollers, they appear factory, but do not appear in any parts book, so I suspect they are a modification.

There is really no extra room to extend track frames for a D2 blade without modifying something, the angle brackets are only a couple inches from the tracks and some space is needed. The D2 is just hard to blade with, practice, large idlers and a winch or counterweight on the back helps.

Dipstick for the oil clutch as Josh said. I feel that I am being "one upped" now! Hahahaha. I think I find something(s) cool to own, now Grant has to dangle that carrot. Gosh darn you! Pictures for everyone to drool over your 5 roller D2 Tailseat, or else! I have been beat! I have only come across one five roller orchard machine, more like a myth; to me it is a unicorn tractor. Next thing it will probably be Direct Start with a 3 spool 44 unit as well!

As usual, I am not doing well with my photo program. I need the granddaughter to set me up. My brother put a factory electric start on the pony but no 44 on it. I am going to start looking for a generator for it, but too many other projects right now. Juiceman, bring a trailer (not a long one) with a strong winch and I will send you home with the big brother to your new 20. A big 20 parts machine. From what I hear, you need another project to keep that little 20 company Grant.

I think my little D2 5U 16971 tailseat tractor needs a younger brother to look up too! Thanks for the offer on the 20, that is very kind and thoughtful of you. I really want to fix up a few things on this one, but then again, battle scars and rusty paint give it "character"
At this point in life, it appears we made need to purchase either a roll back truck or a "rotator". Yes, it may be less expensive owning a "small" trailer, as I tend to rationalize that the big trucks drink the same amount of fuel loaded or empty, so I need to fill the wagon up each time.

jm if your considering a tilt tray truck rather than using the prime mover and low loader when carting just one machine or maybe 2 of the baby crawlers around i suggest have a look at a bogie drive - twin steer tilt tray.

in aus it allows them to have a extra 4 tonnes gross mass over a standard bogie drive truck. with 10 tonne on the steer group and 16.5 on the drive group. if the steer axle group is load sharing you get a extra tonne. it could well be worth looking into. also fit more places than a low loader.

TK88: I probably shouldn't be planting the thought in my brain; I would see myself getting way more iron than I already need here, to justify ownership!
A nice 10 wheeler here would fit the bill; I could find something with a 20k front axle making it 54,000# GVW by itself, or even a 3 axle "Rocket Launcher" similar to Mikey M's that he hauled his new to him D4c out of here a couple of years ago. A slide off or rollback with a large winch would make recoveries much easier. I am fortunate to have what is available for equipment, just not so easy.
Hoping that Grant gets some help with the photos, as myself and others would LOVE to see his 5 roller D-2 as well as his other toys. (I always use photos from my iphone). JM
