I'm fabricating a battery box for my D2 and have a couple of questions, I've searched my archive books and parts manuals but can't figure out-
1. Does the battery ground inside the box or is the cable run to an external ground?
2. Where does the battery cable(s) exit the box? My parts diagram looks like it exits the side wall on the operator's side but I can't see where.
If anyone could help me with these details I would really appreciate it.

Interesting, I just took my D2 box off today and It grounds inside the box. The cable to the starter exits the right side next to the operator. Can't remember how it exits now and it's out in the barn but I;ll look tomorrow if it'll help...

Toby,
They can ground either inside or somewhere outside the box, I've seen both. When it grounds outside the box, it's to a nearby fender bolt. If you're building your own to try to keep close to original, all the boxes I've seen on D2 and D4's, the box is a box longer than the battery as the ammeter mounts in the front of the box an inch or two from the bottom.
I usually make 'em from 12 or 14 ga plate. Leave enough room at top, bottom and sides for some vibration absorbing material. .I use 3/8" weatherstripping material for the top and sides and old conveyor belt for the bottom.

It would be great to get a rough measurement of the cable opening and it's location if possible, I'm kind of fussy when it comes to details.
The box is already made to dimensions I got off an original at a show earlier this summer. I'm thinking about putting a master disconnect switch near the ammeter, otherwise it is an exact duplicate. Thanks for the replies!

Toby,
As far as the holes for the cable, it's different on the remnants of two boxes I have laying around. My suggestion would be to put a 1" or 1 1/4" hole close to the bottom and to the side so the cable(s) would run close to the inside of the fender, out of the way of anything coming over the track. Rubber grommets of various sizes are available from most parts houses. .that would keep the cable from rubbing directly on the sharp edge of the hole(s). Several 3/4" holes in the bottom of the box (and one in each end below the lid) would keep water from accumulating inside plus giving ventilation for the hydrogen gas being produced as the battery charges.
