I'm looking at a Cat 215LC with a blown motor (model 3304, arrangement 6A6501), I found a generator for a good price and it has a 3304 engine but its a 7N3274 arrangement. Will it go into the excavator or do I need to swap the injector pump and other parts? Will it even go into it?
TIA

well the governor set-up would be different as being a genset it would be designed to run at a rpm to give either 50 or 60 cycles(hertz) per second out of the alternator.
but internally it should be the same. the fuel/governor system and the electrics in relation to the watchdog for oil pressure, oil temp and coolant temp should be the only things different other than the exhuast. engine mounts and the fly wheel/bell-housing could be different too but it should just be a case of swapping them over.

I've worked a decent amount of diesels but never messed with injection systems, is changing out the governor best left to a shop?

Hi, nch77.
I think it will go in but you may also need to swap the oil pan and engine oil pickup inside the pan to fit the excavator body. Air cleaner is another possible swap.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

to my knowledge you would unbolt the gensets electricals, injection pump and watchdog set up and bolt the excavator set up on. the engine itself minus the control gear and mounts would be the same. your not actually dismantling the injection system. your only changing it out. the 2 things that can go wrong is you miss time the injection pump or cross-thread a fuel line fitting. the reason for changing the fuel pump is its governor system is designed to run it at constant revs to maintain frequency. they dont idle.

Don't mess with the pump until you take a look at what it has. What TK88 said is mostly incorrect.
I am in the process of fitting a DI 3304 into a 955K and there are so many differences between them that it is almost unworkable.
Differences include;
Flywheel,
Flywheel housing
Sump
Turbo and turbo oil lines.
Intake and exhaust
Fan mount and shaft
Generator/alternator mount.
Crankshaft pulley and pulley mount
Front engine mounts
Rear engine mounts
Oil cooler
Injector pump throttle lever shaft
Oil pump and oil pump pickup are the same but have different part numbers.
You can idle them at least on mine you can by adjusting a limit on the throttle lever.
Arrangement number for the generator is handy to have but you also need the serial number for the engine in order to get a parts book for it. Possibly 83Z.
Do you have some photos of the replacement engine? If one is a direct injected engine and the other is precombustion chamber type then changing pumps over may not be possible.

The replacement motor on the generator is serial 2B100 (near as I can tell from the pic, might a 1 after the last 0), the serial on the excavator is 48V44919.

The number for the generator sounds more like a part number. I think the generator would start with one of the following;
5AA1
5BA1
5CA1
6RA1
6ZA1
9AB1
I should have stated in my post that with your donor engine most issues can be overcome easily. The only issue you may have is if one engine is DI and the other is Pre-com then the injectors may interfere with the existing intake and exhaust.
