1969 977K loader,great 3306 and sick powershift trans.All normal in forward speeds,but will not move in reverse unless I jab the steering pedals hard with my feet.Once moving,it does steer OK,but with more than normal force on the pedals.I pulled the floorplates to look at it; Torque conv jackshaft to trans stops when trans placed in reverse#1 gear.I think the trans is OK but maybe a steering valve problem? or is it a relief valve hung-up? any suggestions please!

I have a notion the bevelgear shaft bearings might be out of it.
They will generate chips of metal that can stick the steering valve spools. But could also be the bevel pinion bearing. Pull the magnetic screen under a square cover in the trans pump suction line. Under floor plates LH side of machine. If it has metal in it, take the PTO cover off, check the bevelgear shaft for side movement, should have none. Also take a look at the pinion to see if it has a bearing problem. Come on back with what you find.

Bob,yup as expected,small shavings on the magnets,not large chunx but small shavings and all the expected black steel dust film.There was a chunk or two of red RTV in there as well so it does look to be a job for a backend cleanout and inspection.I'm right in the process of building a barn before winter sets in here in MD,so I'll have a place to do this.I just put the ROPS back on so at least the bolts are fresh;the fuel tank and counterweights will come off with the forklift,so all isnt too bad.In order to get into the bevel gear bearings do I have to pull the finals? I just got a copy of the service man for this machine and havent read into it yet.

You don't need to take final drives apart for the clean out. But since you will need pressing tools to get the flanges off and back on to the bevelgear shaft I would recomend pulling the pinions out and resealing them while the clutches are out. Might want to pressure test the trans while everything is together though.

I think that the trans may be Ok with a thru and thru cleaning,definitely a pressure test."Thansk" for your advice,now I have a real winter project on hand ahead of me..maybe I can burn the fuel out of the Cat tank to keep warm while I work on it!
