Does anyone have info on the gaskets that fit under the tran cover on a D42T. My book calls for 2-3B889 gaskets for under the cover and the one consistent with that part number does not look correct.

The stock are about 1/4" thick and maybe 5/16" wide. It has an odd curve to it. Anyway, I have started making them but an wondering if that part number has been reassigned. I know that is doubtful.

Anyway, the material I am using is 1/16 inch, which seems a little thin. I wanted to avoid RTV.

My parts manual shows 2-3B866 gaskets for the 2T cover.

Old Magnet-
I have those listed for the inspection plates that fit on the top and on the rear for a total of four.

It appears that there are possibly three. Two on each side at the front that go on the vertical portion at the fron that fit over the flywheel to the main. It appears that there is a separate one that fits over the steering clutch compartment.

Not sure where the 3B889 fits...

You are correct on the inspection plate cover gaskets....my mistake.
2-3B889 gaskets would be the ones that seal the transmission area only. There is no cover gasket for the steering clutch/bevel gear area other than the seals for the bevel gear "dog house". There is no cover gasket for the clutch area either.

The 3B889 should be 3/8 in. square....originals being cork but now they are some kind if fancy composition and pricey at about $75 as I recall.

Mine were $44 each-not $75, but still pricey for my blood. They appear, (through the wrap), that they are a composite as you said of rubber and cork. The 3B889's are approximately 18 inches long.

Those I have must be made to fit around the transmission box, but the shape is not an obvious match. I hesitate to unwrap them...at $44 each

When I get my cover back, I will see what the groove, (if any), looks like on the bottom of it that this gasket should fit in. I may still find a less expensive alternative. When I ordered them I figured each covered half of the chassis, left and right sides...wrong.

Anyway, thanks for looking-maybe someone else came up with another alternative. Maybe the RTV around the gear box. It sure seems like the gasket would be a better idea.

Thanks Old Magnet-

I was thinking it was about $75 for the pair:eek:
3/8 sheet cork is available from McMaster.....also toyed with the idea of using square "O" ring material from same source....even square pump packing would be a candidate. Don't want to get something to stiff though as there is quit a bit of "crush" involved. I don't see it as a candidate for silicone sealing.

Here is the bottom view of a 7U.....same gasket affair.

Here I thought I got a good deal and you burst my bubble:( ....I checked my parts book from 1944 and the list on those gaskets then was $0.10, (yes, a dime).

I am no even going to ask how you come up with so much information...OK...how do you come up with it all??? Experience and doing, I know.

Anyway, I will continue to check. Thank you for the source and posting the photo. It looks as I recalled. I will take a picture of it just so others can see what I am speaking to.
