Late Model D2 Spring Question

More

I have a late model d2 5u ser 17959 tool bar, belly pan, solid front idlers, oil clutch/almost 100 percent undercarriage,2138 hrs, all the stuff that I have been looking for for years.
There is two things that bothers me.
Is there anyone out there that has a quick easy way to lift the front up alittle.
It is like the equilizer spring has settled over the years.I have noticed almost all the d2's that I have seen are sagging alittle. What if a guy put a shim or two under each side whare the spring go'es into the track frame.
The thought of taking the spring out gives me nightmares.Any thoughts.
Also,my tractor has a model 41 (I think)is sounds fine until I go to raise the blade ,then it squeels alittle, almost like the fluid level is low.
Could I have bad filters?? Any thoughts

I don't know about your late model but the earlier ones I am familiar with all have wear plates that were riveted into the spring saddles at the factory. The rivet heads were counter sunk in the plates to make a flat surface. The spring rests on the plates so it doesn't wear and weaken the saddle. I had one D2 that had worn the plates until they had fallen out, it really sagged in the front. From what I can tell they were from 1/4" to 3/8" thick when new. When I re-did my 5U I made new saddles and custom shimmed them so the Cat sat like I wanted it to.

No reason you can't shim the spring like you describe......or between the pan and the equalizer spring which it may need anyway if the rebound spring is not holding pressure against the main spring.....eg. pony spring is loose when sitting with normal load.

The #41 hydraulic unit does not have a filter other than the screen on the inlet fill pipe. The #44 has a filter but it is a very low flow by-pass type unit that is not likely to affect flow.

Low oil level or restricted return flow may be causing your pump squeal.

If wear plates and things look ok but it,s just sagging then you could take the spring to a shop that rebuilds (reshapes) springs and have the leafs reshaped as long as they aren,t broken. We had a shop here in the area that was big in that repair and worked out well whether it was a car, truck, or tractor.

ChuckC had the same problem with his #41 pump. Send him a private message and maybe he can enlighten you. Good luck with the machine.

Compressor, the 41 unit I just took off my D2 squealed some times. You might have to open it up and check the relief valve. The spring broke twice in mine. It might need a new spring and a cleaning. The spring, shim, and the gasket came from my Cat dealer. There is no need to take the unit off the tractor if you don't want to. Disconnect the hard lines and take all the bolts that hold the case closed. You will see the relief valve in there. Take the two 3/4 bolts out and remove the valve. Becareful not to lose the shims under the spring. Don't forget the O-ring that seals the relief valve. Any other question just post here or send me a PM>

CHUCK,
Thanks for the input. Sounds like a job I will do soon.It seems to work ok,but the longer I work it during the day,the louder it becomes.

I like to get a little more oil in the tank by putting the right side of the machine on the high side so a little more oil can be put in the tank. Chuck C
