Hello guys, I have been looking online for a while and can't find anything on the parts I need. I am going to attach some photos if the site will let me. if anyone knows the correct replacment filters and seals I would be greatful even a direction to look, our local cat dealer is more then a pain to deal with. I am looking for the replacement filter for the unit, Cat number on the one I have is 7f7238 and the drive seal 1j-8162

If your cat dealer is not doing the job, try another, I would give Peterson Tractor in San Leandro Ca a call.
The filter is probably going to be Cat only, They do have it, and it has been expensive for a long time.

The seal is common, Cat and other sources will have it, crosses to 5F4721.

yes they do have the filters not cheap. the seal you could get generic from any bearing joint if i understand the markings that was a chicago rawhide seal anyway.

Hi All,

The seal updates to 3H1397 and the filter is only a bypass filter and they are no longer available, so if yours is not to bad just was it out and put it back in.

Regards

Daryl

Filter is ONLY available from Cat. I've been through a ton of interchange manuals and there is nothing close in dimensions. It's like $65 now.

Seal is easily available on ebay, just search for 1J8162 or 3H1397

Thanks Matt. Great to know here, as I plan on servicing several 44's myself included. Glad you did the hard part for some of us already!
Oh yes, any new projects on the way? I haven't been following YT lately; didn't know what mischief you may be up to. Enjoy all of your videos! JM

PNW Hillbilly, That filter from the dealer, Is it a metal one, or paper type like the oil filters?
Last time I bought one (Metal) of those about 25yrs ago they were like $42 ea so I bought two.

The #44 units use two different filters, depending on the serial number of the unit, one is the 7F7238 metal wrapped paper filter, the other is the sock or wound filter like the fuel filter, I think it's the same # as the fuel filter, 2A5886. Both filters provide the same function, only difference is a few parts that hold the filter in place.

The old sock one is the same part number as the fuel filter...which you can get for around $10.  This actually brings up a reasonable question though...why not convert the pump back to using a sock instead of the $70 metal filter?  What other components would you need?  Here are the components that are different between the two setups circled:

Looks like you need the retaining rod assembly 5B9966, a random plate 5F3381, and a different bottom cover 5F3432.  The seal 4F7390 is a generic o-ring, so ignore that.

Here is what is in a fuel filter housing:

So you basically have everything you need from one of those fuel element assemblies except for the 5F3381 plate (probably just use a washer for that?), and the bottom cover.  Maybe you could modify the bottom cover off the later setup to fit it?  I don't know, just an idea to save yourself a few bucks if someone wants to try it.
