Hello Guys;
It looks like I am going to have to remove the steering clutches.If you remove the unit and just remove the hubs to clean the plates,When it goes back together do you have to readjust the backlash on the gears or will they stay in adjustmen? I did my AC#5 but it was totality different This is my first time with a Cat.I just want to clean the plates,Arms ect.ect. Thanks again STEAMROLLER
PS. Also on the all thread fof the Idler bolts Should it be harden or just plain all thread?

hey jim
well when i did mine. i learned from a old coal mine mechanic, that all you really have to do, is just mark everything before you take it apart. mark every nut and bolt and especially the nut that adjusts the backlash on the main gear, and you will be good from there. He fixed many dozers like that, and never had a problem with them. you need anymore help let me know. where you able to get the injectors for your D4 or will you have to go up there and confront them?

Yes, if you mark everything and don't get anything mixed up you should be able to return to original settings.....but check the gear backlash first to see if it needs adjustment for wear. Not that big a deal to have to adjust it.

I'd go ahead and get the hardened all thread for the idler bolts. While they're not a high wear item, it might make future adjustments easier. Don't use grease on 'em when you assemble everything as it'll hold dirt and dust. Instead, I'd use some silicone sealer. It won't hold the dust and grime like grease and still tend to protect the threads better.
Just my thoughts from working with threaded parts in a salt water and marine environment.

Hey bud yes I delt with a guy named JOEL,Very professional he took time with the numbers I gave him looked them up on his computer came back with a new number and price! I bought 4 nozzles.radiator cap,condencer,gasker,gearshift knob.Been there twice.This week end I am going to take the wench off,I would like to get the side rail brackets for the blade off,One side has 8 bolts,not one will break loose.Any ideas Other side is welded up I am going to grind it off. My motto is FIX IT ONCE-FIX IT RIGHT-ITS FIXED FOREVER. I'll give you a call saturday. JIm

hey jim,
all sounds good to me, i will be down this weekend to give you a hand. i am happy to hear that you got everything that you needed off of cat. i will get the rear cover plate for that PTO shaft off one of the spare dozers i have and bring it down for you. other than that, if i can think of anything else, i will bring it with me. talk to you soon.

I would use grade 5 allthread.

I think you are right grade 5 sounds right any ideas on where grade 5 can be obtained? NAPA? a machine shop? I have to look around. Thanks STEAMROLLER

Hey Steamroller, I was able to buy grade 8 allthread for pulling my D2 steering clutches from a local fastener supply store called Fastenal Inc. I think that any nut and bolt supply store in your area will be able to supply the allthread you need. Good luck with your project. John

Steamroller, what we did at the Cat dealer if bolts were too tight to move if it was where it could be hit we,d take a heavy ball pein and wack the heads of the bolts with a few hard blows and many times than not they would come loose then.
