Hello. New member here. Was directed here by another site. Looks like a very good forum! I have a 966B loader serial 57H235 that has a steering issue and any info or advice would be greatly appreciated.. It has developed very jerky steering right and left. Worse when it is warmed up. It gets bad and I fear something will get damaged eventually. Is there a fix for this? Where does one start as far as troubleshooting this problem. It also turns farther left than it does to the right. I dug up some hydraulic steering info on the 966C and wonder if the steering will be similar.

If it has two steering rams then it is possible that one of the ram pistons is bypassing oil feel them and see if one is getting hot

Hi, Donbj.
Sounds like your problem may be in the right steering ram - "turns farther left than it does to the right." It may be that the piston has come off the rod in that cylinder.

While you're at it, you might pull the hydraulic filter, cut it open and check for any metal in it.

They are basically a good, solid loader. We have a C series here on the ranch with an ATECO ripper on the back, It has the lightest steering of ANY loader, grader or wheeled dozer that I have ever come across. You can literally 'throw' the steering wheel one way or the other, change direction and then catch the steering wheel when it has gone far enough. You can steer it with ONE finger tip.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Thanks for the replies/info guys. Much appreciated! Will start looking into this. Also came accross info that said loose linkage on steering box may be a contributor. Have to pull floor pan as well and check.

Hi, Donbj.
Yes, I think there is a follow-up linkage that directs the hydraulics to only move the steering as far as you move the steering wheel.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
