Did caterpillar use Delco and Remy genetators for lights or did Cat manufacture their own generators? Also, are they model specific if they are Delco? I’m interested in making some of our crawlers able to use lights. Specifically; hi-ten, twenty two, twenty eight, r2, r5, rd4 and diesel thirty five. Thanks!

Over the years Cat used a mix of Delco Remy and American Bosch Generators. Most of the lights that I'm familiar with were supplied by "Guide Lamp", a division of General Motors.

Thanks! Would the gear driven models of generators require a specific tooth pulley? Or was it just kind of what ever fits, fits.

they do have a particular dp(diametral pitch) and tooth count to get the right driving ratio. some engines have the spot in the front or the block for the generator to mount and its simply blanked off. some also have a idler gear to transfer the drive from the timing gears.

There are some complications to matching gear drive generators.
Rotation direction varies between D2 and D4,6,7,8,9
D2's have one less gear in the drive train so are different rotation than the rest and the addition of the intermediate drive gear (idler) also reverses rotation. Delco units were pretty much built for the rotation application. At least some of the American Bosch units could be switched to match rotation.

as far as I know....alternators are not rotation specific, generators are
always dropping GOLD, all you have to do is just pick it UP !

SoCalMan, the Twenty Two and the R2 used belt-driven generators according to the parts catalog, so you'd have a bit more flexibility regarding setting up a lighting generator for those. You can always get a basic core rewound to suit your purposes, and new 6 and 12v regulators are available. I don't know about the other tractors you listed also I think that the Diesel 35 might have had a gear-driven generator on the left side of the engine in front of the pony (maybe that's only the RD-6?)
Cheers,

The early Diesel Thirty Fives could have the generator mounted in two different spots, both gear driven. One of the spots is with the bolt on adaptor on top of the timing gear case. The other is under the water pump bolted directly to the timing gear case.
