That would be D318G Ind. Engine and they went in production in 1957 so it probably is about a 1958 or 1959 I,d guess as my Cat SNID book only has start up dates.

SJ, was that an updated D318 somehow, or just a standard D318 engine and CAT began another series of numbers? I know there was a D311 that was a completely different engine from the original, but never heard for sure about any of the others.

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

I can,t remember just what improvements were on the D318G but it still would be the same basic engine as the D6 9U would have used. The D333 was the next engine to replace the D318 and they were a totally a complete new engine and were used in the D6B and many other applications like the 53A loader etc. The later D311 was a totally different engine than the early D311 like was used in the D2 4 & 5U tractors. This later D311 & D330 and the D333 had the compact fuel system housing on them and it was on the right side of the engine and not the left like the D318 and early D311 and the D315 too.I got to thinking that the reason for the G on the end probably meant there were other things added on the original D318 say like a turbo and a few other things possibly but can,t recall without a parts book.
