Colusa Farm Show - 2023

Not in the antique category -
Thought some of you would enjoy a few shots from today.
Holt had a large display of engines - from the small 19 hp 3 cyl to the large one that did not have a spec sheet tied to it.

The very large machine is for laying drainage pipes in fields - used in many locations in California, Imperial Valley, Delta, Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys as examples.
Powered by Caterpillar and on Caterpillar Running Gear.

Nasty sharp bends on the exhaust tubing on that last engine but perhaps that's just a temp setup for the show display

Cheers,

Last of todays pictures - hope you enjoy
(If pictures are not in proper order - look in the bottom margin for description then match to the specification sheet photo)

Those "nasty bends" seem to be quite common on the various engines of various mfgrs I saw today.
These required emission control devices have sure changed the engines as we new them from days gone by.
What would one do without the software and computer?

thats the problem everything is electronically controlled. and the manufacturers particularly the Europeans and JD are locking the systems down so much you cant even give the machine a oil, grease and filter change without the software to tell the ecu you have done it.

its ridiculous. the companies will train you or your mechanic for a fee of course, but you have to go to the approved training dealer workshop you cant just go to the nearest service agent and learn cause their not allowed to train you its even a problem for their own apprentices.
its a real issue in australia becuase the distances are so vast. in rural areas most mechanics charge travelling time. a property the uncle worked on it was a 3hr round trip just for the dealer to make a service call let alone fix anything.

ignoring the sensors and electronics for the fuel injectors and the emissions systems. mechanically they really havent changed since the 70s most now use torque to yield bolts rather than normal high grade bolts and they use slipper bearings rather than cast in place babbit. you can still diagnose rod knock with a screwdriver or length of dowel. yes the tolerances are finer and more repeatable.

Last photo's from the Colusa Farm Show - maybe someone will post some from Tulare, Ca - it is next week.
There were multiple displays inside buildings, much more equipment than I have recorded in photos - took most of these for the enjoyment of ACMOC - so tried to get CAT!
In case it does not show well, that 75 on the JD Combine - 75 years of self propelled combines -
