A Caterpillar No. 28, as D6 Pete stated. Before the end of WW2, LeTourneau Model R and Model S rooters were supplied by Cat dealers as a ripping attachment .. but in 1944, Cat commenced designing their own towed rippers, based on the LeTourneau Rooter design.
The No. 18 and No. 28 were introduced in 1946, to suit the D7 and D8 respectively .. right after Caterpillars decision in 1944, to discontinue their attachment partnership with LeTourneau .. and to build attachments in direct competition with LeTourneau.

The No. 28 weighs 13,100 lbs, and can rip to 30" deep. It's 8' 8" wide and 20' long, and holds 3 ripper shanks, that are 3" wide by 10" deep.

Thankyou OZ for the reply, yes the ripper is a # 28 Ser # 7D 923. my parts book covers 7D 501 to 7D1179. so i guess that covers the #28 s. The 28 also differ in size as well as they have a large bracket on back for another push D8 to put his blade on and push. I am presently replacing seals and bearings in wheels. They had been left quiet loose for a long time , it looks like!. book says you can add 2,200 lbs of sand inside back if needed !!. peter

of soil conditions you maybe playing with that Ripper in, but I watched CatIron tow his with an RD8 this summer in a farm field. The real work that your engine will do makes an awesome sound! He added a small hydraulic powerpack and rams to his so that any tractor can hook to it, not just a cable lift tractor!
