Adwest, the Cat repair manuals are usually most of what you need in terms of technique. Once you review the process described in the manual, if you have any questions about interpretation, come back and the team will help refine your understanding. You will also need tools. Cat's manuals refer to Cat tools but you can just about always use a generic equivalent. What's important is to use your judgement on safety as some steps involve pressing and pulling with pressures in the tens of tons
Are you talking about the coupling 7h1322 and this coupling is pressed on the bevel gear shaft
Did you remove the center retaining nut? Use 8B7552 Forcing Bolts, they are harder than grade 8.
To bad there are no notations in the service books, because as Neil stated "generally you can get by with generic". But other times it needs to be better than just grade 8. Also back in the day most of the Cat parts men could steer you in the right direction. In most cases today we deal over the phone or computer and don't know the parts men. As well as this could be the first encounter the parts man is having with our vintage equipment.
Something I tend to forget, IF GRADE HARDWARE FAILS time to call Cat and get the right hardware. I was having carrier roller towers on a 9u fall off. Cat grade 8 was not up to the job. Replaced with the correct part number never another problem.
Cat does make certain "High Strength" bolts
McMaster-Carr has Grade 9 fasteners as does Cat. I'd be concerned about stripping the threads out of the hub. I would be looking at adapters to get a hydraulic pancake cylinder to do the job if there is enough room in there.
