I have book for D4 service and repair but they don't show the same top cover as what is on the 955. Anyone have instructions on removing this cover. I need to get to brakes and steering clutches.

the books i found in the tech library are for the later models.

"i reject your reality and substitute my own" - adam savage. i suspect my final words maybe "well shit, that didnt work"

instead of perfection some times we just have to accept practicality

You need to strip EVERYTHING down to the parting line to get the cover out.

My book for my 955, 12A7301,is a reprint of the Caterpillar Service Manual by Jensales. I found this manual on E-Bay. Money well spent for this machine. It does not explain how to get the transmission cover off to get to the brakes and steering clutches. That is covered in the D4 crawler Service Manual. Although from experience, to get the transmission cover off the Traxcavator Frame has to come off. There is a brace under the seat that connects the sides of the Traxcavator Frame at the back that sets right on top of the transmission cover. Once the Traxcavator Frame is off the machine what is left is basically a D-4 Dozer. I took the motor out of my 955 with the Traxcavator Frame still on the machine. I will never do that again. There was as little as a 1/4 inch clearance on the sides of the frame and the oil filter housing on the motor. I had to grind the top of a plug in the filter housing off to get the motor to clear. Once I got the motor out I went ahead and removed the Traxcavator Frame. It made putting the motor back in the machine much eaisier once I finished rebuilding it. I did not remove the lift arms and bellcrank from the frame. I only removed the bucket and used a small forklift in the front and a 2 ton crane in the back to remove the traxcavtor frame. I would not attempt to remove the Traxcavator Frame without the manual. I did a lot of things two or three times because I did not initially have the manual. This is one of the hardest machines I have ever worked on. Everything is so close and tight, it makes everything you do very difficult. I do not have scanning capability or I would send you a copy of my book. Good Luck bboaz

Thanks for replies, I forgot to mention that this unit has the D6 under carriage "my understanding" It has a bolt in cross bar and top cover does not go over clutch housing. My D4 books shows two different tops early/later mine is closer looking to later design, but mine has brake peddles mounted on top. The book shows them mounted on tractor its self. Just trying to make sure there is not something i'm not seeing

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
