Why does the 22 have a foot operated main clutch rather than a hand clutch?
Is it the only old cat to have a foot clutch?

Hi, John.
The earlier small gas tractors didn't have enough 'grunt' to need the extra grabbing power of an over-center clutch which does need a hand operated lever to actuate it. You can get a good bit more pressure on the friction plate with an over-center mechanism than you can with springs unless you have Magilla Gorilla standing by to depress the clutch pedal.

International Harvester brought out one iteration of their TD24 with a foot operated clutch - was NOT one of their 'more inspired' notions. But then the TD24 was not exactly an 'inspiring machine anyway.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

John,
The 2-Ton, 10, 15, 20 8C, 22, and R2 5E had foot clutches. Not sure if both models of the 15 had foot clutches or if there are other Cat models with foot clutch..

My guess at the why is the right foot can operate either or both steering brakes and the left foot can operate the clutch. This leaves one hand free for something else. I have seen equipment that had ropes so that the Cat operator could pull them. I doubt that it would have been for operating a blade as they didn't come new with blades.
