Power steering upgrade for Cat 212 grader

More

So I have committed to buying the 212 grader that I was looking at and am in the process of getting its brakes and a few other minor things fixed before I transport it.

One major thing though that I would really like to do for this machine to make it easier to run is give it power assistance for steering.  I have seen talk of a power steering upgrade for old Cat graders.  Does anyone know anything about that (I assume it was an OEM thing)?

Regards,
Langdon

Hi, LangdonStevenson.
There were some after-market systems available for them but I am not aware of anything that Cat did for them. others may know more about that than I do. One of the most common after-market systems was the Rivinius which was basically a hydraulic booster that was fitted into the steering shaft at the first support bearing ahead of the cab. It does need a hydraulic pump to power it, as did all the other systems.

Possibly your best bet for finding one would be some of the machinery dismantlers, such as Chad Enyeart in Wyoming: 307 760 8483.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

I would suggest converting to hydraulic steering if you're going to do anything. I.E. put a cylinder on the tie rod and a four port steering valve mounted at the cab.

I have the 16 page instruction for installing Cat power steering. It is in pdf form but the site will not accept a 13.2 mb file so either someone tell me how I can post it or send me an email so that I can send it direct.

om you could submit a public link to onedrive or google drive. ive done that with files to large for email.

as redneck suggested a steering cyl and valve unit like they use for boats would work you would have to get a suitably sized ram though.

OK, thanks for the info.
I have yet to master the "Google" thing but was able to send up to 25MB pdf file via yahoo mail to John Gaunt. He can add it to the Technical Library.

File received and loaded into the library. It's 01:10 am here in the UK but felt it important to do this ASAP.

Thank you to everyone for your feedback!

Deas Plant - thank you for the suggestion, I will check out the dismantlers and see what they might have.

1972RedNeck - I have seen conversions like that. Definitely worth considering. I would like to do something "original" if I can, but that would of course give me a good result.

Old Magnet - thank you for providing the steering booster installation manual, I will download it and have a look.

John Gaunt - thank you very much for uploading the manual to the library. I really appreciate the assistance and will go through it now.

Thank you again everyone - as always, I really appreciate the assistance and enthusiasm.

Regards,
Langdon

Hi, kenrob.
A serial # for your machine might help. Photos of the power steering booster would likely help more as there were several different systems used on early graders.

P.S. Is your system like the one in the photo at the top of this page?
