D2 questions- from a newbie

I'm the proud new owner of 5U4848.  It has a stuck engine and reportedly a stuck steering clutch.  Are there sites that can rebuild the D2 for you (the customer).  Thanks for any information.

Do some research on freeing up the motor and you may find this is a job you can do yourself.

There are a lot of good videos out there, Squatch253 has some great rebuild videos on D2, D4 and a lot of other great information. Hamiltonville Farm dose a lot of will it start videos give you some ideas.
I'd get manuals operators & maintenance manual, Parts Book and service manual. These are a must if your serious; they do have a great online library here for members. Ebay also has most of what you'll need.

To answer your question, you might call Chad Enyeart who bought Zimmerman's in Laramie WY who I think restores old tractors possibly. antiquecrawlerparts.com

If you are mechanically inclined and have an interest in working on the tractor then you should get the Caterpillar "Serviceman's Reference Book" (service manual), the Operators and Parts manuals.  They are readily available on the popular auction website.  These tractors are not complicated and are not difficult to work on if you have an inclination and enjoy such things.  The Serviceman's Manual is well written and is very informative.
Frankly, I don't know why one would buy one of these tractors if one weren't inclined to work on them.  Regardless, if you don't want to work on the tractor then I suggest posting a "Caterpillar Mechanic in Montana" on in this forum to solicit someone here to help you find someone in Montana.

Easy there Delta KJ, let's give him credit for becoming a paid member! He may have reasons for owning and either unable to work on it himself or enjoys enlisting those that are able; I have plenty here, and cannot/will not do everything myself, when I am so fortunate to have an old CAT wrench hand available one hour away. I could make a full time job working on these critters here. My schedule does not afford me to do so, even if I wanted to do everything. Not everyone is able to afford the equipment needed to repair as well. It takes years to accumulate hand tools, jacks, presses, hoists, forklifts, etc.
Sorry to say I do not know of anyone in Montana that works on D-2s.
Please share photos of your tractor at least, I am sure many would like to chime in with more "help". JM

Fat Dan has some good suggestions and Juiceman has the spirit. I would recommend Pacific Northwest Hillbilly on YT too, he shows you what can be done if you are determined.

Good luck and welcome to the nuthouse!

Outstanding replies. Thank you guys! I'll take your advice and seek out the parties mentioned. I'm afraid I don't have enough time left to learn the trade and get the tools to do it myself. I can't stand to see such a well designed piece of equipment sit idle.
