3400 G, D engine was created by catrat
Can any one tell me what oil filter element would be in the canister for the old J series engines. I have the filter houseing and cat no.for filter.it was [houseing]made by purOlator :confused: but know one can cross it for me. There was nothing it the filter houseing when i opened it.:rolleyes: Am not sure it is complet it looks like one hole is direct from pump other goes to the tube along block that i think oils the rods and mains. From the way this unit connets it appears to be a full flow filter oil can only get to engine if it goes through filter.:)

Many if not most all the older filters were changed over to a full flow by a kit that Cat sold. If it was done the top cover stud had a hex nut on top with a notch cut across it & if it was the old bypass it would have a "T" cross bar on the stud coming up.The filter numbers changed for the full flow but the original I believe was 9F6700 element.

What model J would you like.
My parts book shows five different models all using two element type filters which would be by-pass type. Not until effective with 7J3819 did Cat offer the full-flow change over kit.

SJ and Old Magnet Thanks the one i am puting it on is in the 200 series no. it came off one in the 900. I had given some thought to puting one of them relocation out fits on it and change filter.:) The brass plate where houseing mounts is not that thick and don't know if i could thread in two fittings for the lines also they go at a angle:eek:

Here are a couple of parts descriptions for early 7J filters.
The later style that we are all familiar with started with 7J773 but for some reason the full flow conversion doesn't kick in until 7J3819.

Thanks Old Magnet that may help. Mine appears to be part of both has T bar on top and base mount is different also don't have the small hose from top. Looking at them on the base where large nut is with spring and ball mine is missing both. will get a plate machined and put on a spin on filter.

I am curious if oil filters that are accidently replaced with a full flow, or replaced in the other dirrection would damage the engine. What is the difference in full flow and the other type.. Lewis, Mid. Mo. burrrrr

The difference is a full flow filters all the oil going to the bearings & other parts of the engine where the by-pass only filters a portion of it so the full flow is the best possible system that can be used then it has the filtered oil all the time going to parts.

Before you go capping off that by-pass line make sure the flow wasn't used to lube something. The later by-pass lines just returned to the sump and get blocked off as part of the cartridge conversion kit.
