I purchased the D6 2H about 5 years ago from a farm in california. This machine was purchased new from Caterpillar to the farmers family back in 1936. And was still being used up to the date I purchased it. In fact, I paid the owner the purchase price, on the deal he could still use it for 2 weeks pulling a large plow drainer.

From a Brass Tag on the engine it was Overhauled in the 1970's, and looks like a couple of sets of tracks/ rails have been fitted (I am guessing), the engine hour meter shows ONLY 620 Hours LOL, (how many times around ??, I remember seeing a cat D2 on EBay with only 34 hours, Looking at the tracks, it had a hard 34 hours work LOL).

I recieved with the machine, A full Set of Caterpillar Manuals. And the Toolbox was Full of the Caterpillar Tools ( Minus the Toolbox Lid).

All I have done to this Machine is the following:-

1. UnFrozen the Track Adjuster Nuts, and Adjusted the Tracks.
2. Adjusted the Brake Bands, It needs a Left Brake Re-Line, Maxed out ?.
Spent most it life Turning Left ????
3. Washed the filters, the Oil Was a Golden Clean Colour so I left in it LOL.
4. Flushed the Fuel Tank and Fuel Lines.
5. Adjusted the Pony Engine Clutch.
6. All Grease Points where that full of Grease and old built up Grease, I steam cleaner her down.

This Caterpillar machine has been well looked after, maintained and serviced by a family generation. It had been greased up more that it had been cleaned.

I am using the D6 to Crush up Hardcore (Bricks and Concrete), for the Cat-Cave Highway. Buying in Crushed Concrete is more expensive than just raw mal'l. So I have got the D6 doing the Job. It breaks my heart to see the pain in the tracks and rails etc, But a Cat was built to Do IT..

Photos of Catman Snr. at the Controls, having soon fun.

Some of you may remember this machine on the back of a Pete Rig, England Bound from California Tractors Web Site. Last Piccy ( I still have the Canopy in my shed, removed for shipping hight lol)

I have a Good Question ? Should I keep the D6 in the same State as a working machine, as from 1936 ???, Or do I Retore IT, and re-paint it back to new spec ???.

Personally I like the Fact that my D6 is very much ( As Is ) Still a Working Machine??

Any Comments ??

Keep up the good work, if you get some shine on those pads and rails it will look a lot better (to me).

I prefer them in "working cloths" and available to do the job they were intended for myself. You can always turn it in to a "trailer queen" or museum piece at some later time.....just keep up the maintenance.:) :)

Nice looking old critter as it is but you could clean it up a bit and put a fresh paint job on it. I sure wouldn't go for a "full" restoration. .you'd be afraid to use it afterward for fear of scratching it up. I appreciate a nice looking Cat but I don't have 'em just to look at either. .they earn their keep around here.

It would look as this one, but this is a wide gauge;)
But leaving it as it is , is no shame,

Thanks for the Replys, I think i will keep this Caterpillar Machine is (As Used Ex Farm Condition)

The D6 has run for 14 hours on the brick/concrete, some of the bricks are just dust, and ready for the fining adding back in(the harcore I sized throu a riddle bucket), then a 12 ton vibro roller, and 6 inches of concrete fibre mech should be a hard surface for running cats over :).

8C 361, after 14 hours running in hardcore, them rails are like mirrors, Its nice to see a machine working, and the tone from the exhaust as it barks and climbs over piles is the best sound to my ears :)

Holland Cat, Nice Looking D6 :) , If my D6 looked like yours, I would keep it in the Front Room and watch T.V from the Seat LOL :D

Hello Tom Madden, I have decided to keep the D6 2H in Work Clothes . In Respect of the Owners prior to myself, I plan on maintaining the oils and lub points etc, General Mantainace, I do need to fit a new Brake Band, I plan on fitting the canopy back on with the old tin signs used to repair the old timber roof.

Referance Holland Cat, nicely restored / Painted D6. It would look nice to see my D6 next to his shinny D6 on one Photo to show "As Original Ex Farm", next to "Restored Shinny" :D
