As stated before, i am new to Cat equipment. I have recently purchased a Cat D4D sn 7R503. I have also purchased an operators manual and a parts manual from Jensales. The only thing i can find in either of these about the fluids (oils) are the capacities in the parts manual. can anyone tell me what type of oil to use? My AC HD20's used SAE30 in the engine, final drives, steering clutches, etc. it used SAE30 in just about everything. Are the cat's the same? Should i buy the service manual also and would it have that information in it? Dave.

I'm not sure when they started publishing them but the info you are looking for is in a supplemental manual as part of the service manual. The one I have covers serial numbers 22C1-up and 58J1-up D4D's and they recommend SAE 30 above 32 deg. F. for the diesel engine crankcase, transmission and torque converter compartment, bevel gear compartment and final drives. This is all described in the "Lubrication and Maintenance Guide" this one being form #GEG00004 (1-70) and calls for Superior Lubricants (Series 3) only.

The 22C and 58J are slightly earlier tractors (late 60's) with D330 engines where yours should be a 3304. I'm thinking they would be the same lube requirements but I can't say for sure.

Yes OM, the D330 & 3304 would use the same crankcase oil.While I was working yet at the dealer we only had one crankcase oil for all engines and it was then series 3- # 30 in summer & 10 in the winter. I know today the oil designations are different than back then as multi grades have come into the picture now.Just before I retired the truckers started to use the 15-40 oils if I recall in their truck engines. OM, I see we hve a new spammer signed in this morning again.

Thank you all for your responses. It looks like i will be getting some SAE 30 wt oil and getting the service manual and/or supplement to verify. Old Magnet, mine is the powershift model. Currently is is getting the blade refaced. I am looking forward to its arrival here at my land as i have trails to build and trees to push down. Again, thank you all for your knowledgable responses.
