Early D4 6U Regulator options ?

Gday

I am in the Process of cleaning the cooling system on the D4 6U #300
Upon removal of the top housing of the thermostat, I found There is no regulator to be found just a big empty hole:eek:

On further reading here I have worked out that Cat changed the lower housing to suit newer Thermostats(Regulators)

Looking at my lower housing, I can't seem to find the part# on it, to see if it is the early or late type housing, and which Regulator to buy.
These are the options I have found so far
Option A
1. I did find a post that says a 6F-9467 Regulator is to suit a D4 6U, Is this regulator a Lower serial# type D4 6U one or a later D4 6U one please ?

2. Is a retaining ring required to secure this Regulator and what is the part number please?
If it the early type Regulator I could go this way, and buy a regulator and the retaining ring

Option B
On further reading I found a article which says you can use these following parts can be used in replace, of a Housing which uses 6F-9467 Regulator

8F-8817 Regulator
8F-8882 O-Ring
8F-8884 Retainer
2H-4939 Retainer
2F-8518 Gasket

I could go this way, but it comes back to not knowing if a 6F-9467 is too suit my housing

Option C

Or change the housing and put a later model
2H-5847 Later style Housing
2H-9986 Thermostat
2H-1172 Gasket

All I can tell you about my Regulator Housing is it is has a lip about 20mm down inside the bore at the same level as the inlet for the bypass passage, and I can't seem to find the #number located on it, It is maybe on the block side?

Cheers

Call up CAT dealer, I expect they will sub it out for you and you will wind up with a standard thin flanged automotive style that rests on the gasket ledge and a gasket that fits around it.

Or go to auto parts house and select one, they may have a listing for D311 or D2.

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

The 6F-9467 regulator and 8B-9828 retainer fits 6U-1 to 6U9063.

The later style regulator requires a housing change to a 2H-5847 (no retaining ring) and was used from 6U9064-up.

I don't have any info on that last series of numbers for conversion. Would be curious to know where the info came from and if it works:)

Cheers for the help Old magnet and CC
You guys have been a big help once again.

Now I know with info you gave me my tractor should have a housing to suit the 6F-9467 Reg,

Old magnet would you possibly please have a scan of the older style lower housing to suit the 6F-9467 regulator and one of the newer style housing please out of the parts book.
In my D315 service manual the picture of the housing looks to be a very generic picture ( Just a flow diagram ) and I cant compare it to my housing, Be a big help so I can order the correct regulator please.

I have contacted the local Cat dealer all of the parts quoted are discontinued but the 6F-9467,8F8817 ( regulators ) are still available.

Old magnet I found the info for the update on a service gram that OzDozer had posted on one of the forums, If I can find the thread again , I will post a link to it for you

CC I have thought about what you have suggested, but when the regulator opens it shuts off the bypass channel, and trying to find a aftermarket automotive one that will close the bypass channel off maybe impossible to find, but you never know.

Cheers for the help guys

Gday Old Magnet

The pictures are excellent and thank you very much for posting them, I very much appreciate the help,

Judging by the 2 pics, my housing is the early style, as by looking at the pic the bypass water channel is cast into the housing early type and the later style has a inspection cover 3H-5572 over the bypass channel and the top of the housing is more square.

Thanks again old magnet
