Putting the blade back on my D9D with a #29 rear CCU. The book calls for lang lay cable but I'm not having much luck finding any. What will happen if I use regular lay cable?

i would go to a joint that specialises in rigging for cranes and winches. they should be able to help you. the difference is how the cable is wound when its made. and how flexible it is.

does the book specify a diameter and strand count. example is 5/8 dia 10 x 25 strands

Not much will happen except maybe it won't last as long. Lang lay cable is more flexible which suits CCU's due to the number of sheaves they go around. The main thing is to get the correct number of wires and strands. I usually use whatever is available at the time and the difference in life of the cable is significant.

Should use 1/2" 6x25 wire core, right lang lay.

Book says 1/2" 6x19 independent core improved plow steel. Would 6x25 be better?

Hi, 1972RedNeck.
I don't know where you hail from but this company may be able to help - if you are not living on Jupiter - or somewhere equally remote.

thanks rome. confirmed what i thought. most crane cables ive seen are lang lay cables. and yes in operation a regular lay cable would be more like a steel bar when under load were as lang type cables would have more flex as the strands are more towards a 45 deg to centreline than the shallow angle of standard cable.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
