RD-4 back from the grave

First want to say without all the information provided by all you this old girl would still be at the bottom of a ravine rusting in several feet of mud.

I’m a shade tree mechanic with zero practical knowledge about CAT's I wondered on to this one with trees growing through the frame and the owner said if I could move it I could have it. It took over a year a couple of chain saws and 100 dollars in beer money to a couple of guys running a log skidder to drag it back to my barn.

I got the pony running after a major scavenging hunt and today I fired up the diesel for the first time now here is where it got very interesting the compression release did not release and the fuel rack was stuck on wide open let me tell you that was something trying to shut her down. I loosened the injector lines reliving the fuel pressure it worked but what a mess.

So with all that being said I could use some suggestions on breaking free the rack as I assume it is suppose to move with the throttle and on the compression release the run start handle moves but wont release the compression so what’s the best way to free it up as well. Hope you find this as entertaining as I did for me a runaway diesel was something to see!

The decompression lever runs a series of linkages that hold open the exhaust valves. Check that all the linkage is hooked up and correctly. If hooked up wrong it will not open the valves. I pulled the valve cover on mine and played with the linkage until it operated right.

Injector pump, pull cover off of side and spray with penetrating oil. Slowly work linkage back and forth. Use caution in applying force.

I'll give it a shot of liquid wrench and check the linkage.

Grayrat,
Cut out a piece of plywood, or somthing similar for blocking the air inlet so you can be ready next time. Not near the mess.

Kelly, the flat board is a good idea but won,t work if it still has the pre-cleaner on it. I dyno tested probably 100s of engines at the dealer and a never ran one with the pre-cleaner top on and I had a square piece of plywood right by the engine when it was started. I can,t recall except once that I had to use it and it was a customers engine and they forgot to hook the gov. linkage to the rack bar on a D9 engine and I used the board then to stop it. From then on I always made sure the throttle would work and shut off the rack before I even started the engine.

SJ,
Your right about that, not working with the pre-cleaner on the intake pipe….that’s one reason I posted the photo showing the pre-cleaner removed. In the event one has a Run-Way with the per cleaner stalled , (from experience) a good “Cart hart or Levi jacket works real well, or as the instructions mentions using a piece of plastic sheeting…..if handy . I would suggest when starting a engine for the first time or after working on most of the fuel system, rack or and, governor one shouldn’t be surprised if it did Run-Way. The main thing is being ready . ;)

Kelly, sorry I didn,t notice that the precleaner was removed and yes you can,t be too careful and also I always kept a 3/4" open end wrench in my hip pocket too just in case and others did too at the shop and the road mechanics too.

Should have seen the tree I had to cut down to move her grew up between the track and blade. I took it for a spin and after she died going down hill I bled the fuel lines again. The steering clutches finally broke free and its running smooth.
