Caterpillar Thirty Transmission gear question

More

Hello all:  We are refurbishing a Cat Thirty and while washing out the transmission we see  a small gear (#1B1586) mounted on a removable plate in the bottom of the case. It looks like an oil slinger and only meshes with the pinion shaft.  The teeth on this gear are very short. Was it made this way at the factory or is this a very worn out gear? it is rusty and almost looks machined. There was a 3/8" nut and a damaged reverse idler shaft oil cup in the bottom of the case that looked like they went through a gear at one time.  Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

That's the reverse idler gear? If so, I'd say you need one too.

Hello:

This is not the reverse idler gear. It sits in the bottom of the case on a removable hatch and meshes with the pinion shaft. It does not transmit power , probably an oil slinger. It almost looks like it was machined. The other gears are fine. .

That is the oil "thrower" gear, it says so in the parts number book, the parts book also shows that gear as definitely having teeth.

If you want it to work, you better find another gear with teeth, an earlier part number for the gear is S-1265, running on a S-1194 shaft, put a advert in the For Sale / Wanted section, there are a few guys around wrecking Cat 30 tractors who will happily lighten your clip.....

You could also get one made if you can't find one. It's a pretty simple gear
