I'm looking for the length of the cable for my D7 17A. I got the specs a few years ago from Old Magnet, but I didn't get a length. The machine is not here (45 miles away) or I would simply measure.
I also wonder if the CCU is "correct" for my machine? It has a number with "D6" at the end. See pic

That should be a #25 cable control and was used on different Cat tractors not only the D7 or D6. I don,t have anything on how much cable it would take.I have a #30 cable control operators book but it doesn,t list a length for that one. I don,t know if a parts book would list it or not but don,t have a parts book for the 25 C. control.

The D6 on your serial number plate indicates your cable control has the gearing for a D6 tractor that runs at a higher RPM than your 17A, Therefore your cable control unit should run a bit slower mounted on a D7.

hello Stretch,the info i have says that the 25 ccu fitted d7-6 but heaver with adapter to fit d6 ,
d7 ccu weigth 1990 pounds ,225ft of 1/2'' cable.

The O & M manual shows 72 feet of 1/2 in. cable for the rear ccu and six-part line.
60 Feet for rear ccu and four-part line.

I used to run 65' on the 4- part line. I liked a couple extra wraps.

I also liked to run a 300' spool on the fender because they usually wore out and broke near the CCU. With a spool you just pull off a few feet and save about 40' and use the old up completely.

I have no idea what 1/2" cable cost now but if I were 'using' the machine, I'd buy at least a 100' to 150' and put the excess on the fender.

The #25 CCU was designed to fit the D8, the D7, and the D6 .. and came as a Cable Control Group, and an Adaptor Group.

The Cable Control Group comprised a fully assembled CCU, and the Adaptor Group comprised all the various parts necessary to adapt the CCU to the particular model of tractor.

The #25 CCU designed to fit the D6 had "D6" stamped after the S/N to identify it as being the model of CCU designed for the D6 only. This model of #25 CCU had an 11 tooth pinion, and a 22 tooth bevel gear .. as compared to a 14 tooth pinion, and 22 tooth bevel gear on the D8 and D7 versions.

Always fit enough cable to ensure that there are at least two wraps of cable left on the drum, when the tractor attachment is at its deepest penetration.

The use of a cable spool attached to the tractor is a first class idea, and this allows cable to be regularly moved to ensure an even wear pattern on the cable.
