Hello guys;
I was moving my D4 back and forth to try to break the steering clutches loose,No luck.When I stopped after about 30 min.I shut it down,Then I noticed that the antifreeze was pouring out the overflow tube on to the ground.I think that the water temperature regulator is stuck,frozen whatever.In the book they use a special tool #3B7184to remove the retainer in the pipe.How do you remove the retainer if you don't have the tool? Can you still buy it,are there other tools that will work? Such as a Gear Puller,Or do I have to make my own? Also this D4 has the Hyster4DN wench on the rear with the extened tubes to fill the Final Drives.How do you tell when you have enough gear oil in the rears?I can't see down the pipe to check as it bends.
Any thoughts on these problems? Thanks STEAMROLLER

You possibly could rig up a puller with a piece of rod and bend the bottom with a little hook on it so it would go in the slots in the retainer and weld it on a long bolt and make up a slide hammer and you,d have to use an old heavy wrist pin or something like that on the bolt to make up the slider.As for the finals the book calls for 1 3/4 gallons in each one (7 quarts). You could have compression getting in the cooling system to if it was coming out the overflow or bad head gasket or low liner so it,s going to take some checking further if it,s not the thermostat.With the slide hammer you,ll have to alternate from one side to the other as you try to pull it so it more or less comes out evenly.

The fill procedure with the winch is the same as without. Fill until oil begins to drip out of the filler.....top it off slowly as it takes a while to vent out all the air.

that the steering clutches are stuck then I would assume that you should FLUSH and FLUSH again the cooling system before tearing into it as it is probably full of rust and crud.
When you think its clean flush it again and again....!!!!!
