have spent time looking at parts manuals, pictures trying to solve this question. The parts book are no help.
What goes in the top three holes? This box looks like the one on my 5T 6V electric start pony. I am thinking the bottom three holes are for light switches that predate the rotary light switch found on the 6V U series electric pony tractors. The bolt pattern is odd being that the holes are not on a common center line. I had considered a master switch until I read you will damage the generator if you run the engine without a battery. I have yet to see a non direct start with a master Switch. I have considered a lamp, but both of my 9U have a dash light between the oil and temp gauges. Any ideas please.

Hi dmgrow,
I have one of those boxes except for the light switches. The top three holes are for the starter switch (see photo) which consists of a bracket and switch used on the petrol series tractors
hope this helps

I am working on a R2 and can those boxes be found anymore? Also can the switch be obtained still?

3J1Bill, where did you get the starter button? Did you build your own box, or is one available still?

If you just want lights that work and are not doing a resto, you can get a switch from cat. $60 bucks. The new switch is the same as a D5 with the round knob. It appears that the new switch will take the old style lever knob. The new switch does not have the dash light only selection. The dash would come on with the headlights. The second position turns on all four lights two front, two rear. If you have an old switch, it can be taken apart and cleaned up. Newer battery boxes in the U series have a auto reset circuit breaker. I plan to add one to each of my battery boxes. Be sure to calc the amp draw for the breaker if you have changed battery voltage or the number lights. The pics returned to my post are great. I have wondered about the top hole for some time. Still thinking there has to be a cutoff date when cat went from three toggle switches to the rotary switch. The basic box seems to have been used from 22s to U series (not confirmed). How about info for round top vs square top.

Thanks. I got a new original switch and light switches from Florin Tractor. Very helpful. Will be missed.
