I have a d7 17a that is not releasing the right steering clutch. I was wondering if there is any adjustments or how I can test the steering clutch system to determine what needs to be rebuilt. Also, I can't get the tractor to go into gear with the machine running, is this the flywheel brake that needs to be adjusted? Thanks

You need to adjusted the brake cluch he is outside the cluch housing were the drive shaft is instaled and for the stering cluch you need 3 inchs free mo
vementon top lever control.

Thanks, I checked the steering lever freeplay and I do have 3 inches. It is equal to the left steering lever that does work.

If you can feel free movement you must be feeling some resistance too so the release yoke and bearing are intact. There should be a square cover on the rear of case behind each clutch. Take them off each side and look in with a light. Has his tractor sat for a long time? sometimes the clutch plates rust together.

I will pull the cover off, it has a winch that I must remove first. The machine was operated last summer and the steering worked half of that time. At the begining of the summer it worked ok then slowly it would not turn at times until now, it is not turning at all. Thanks for the reply.

That intermittant problem puts a different light on things. Have someone help you and work the levers while you look in there. Look for a broken pin/screw connecting the yoke to the bearing cage or a bad bearing. Also look for any side movement in the bevel gear shaft.

Sounds to me as if the clutches might need loosening a shade, if one is too tight the other doesn't release properly, try slackening the adjusters to give about 4 inches free movement at the levers and try again before pulling the machine to pieces.
