Hey all, been a while since I stopped by. Been too busy with work and farming and all. I've run into a bit of luck and good timing with my latest find.

I've hauled home 5J1, a 1938 vintage D2 in excellent condition. Motors were free and all components pretty much intact. As you can see in the pictures most all of the sheet metal is in great condition, with the exception of a fender, the lower engine guard dings, and a little crinkle on the front guard.

We pulled her on the trailer with dad's trusty old Oliver 1650 and off with the In-Law's 4440. In spite of this show, the old D2 gave me oil pressure almost immediately after the clutch, and fire within 5 revs after the throttle was laid in. Running on 3 cylinders, maybe 4 at times, she powered herself into the shed, awaiting a top-to-bottom refinish.

WOW, what to start with? I think this machine definitely deserves a top-to-bottom going through. I'm thinking a few new parts, such as a straight PTO shield, the right lower engine guard since it was cut for the Hyd pump, a new throttle lock casting. I think I can bend the fender back, fill in the wallowed out bolt holes in the other engine guards, and straighten the front guard.

Anything else I'm missing?

Enjoy the pictures:

Hello Yieldmap, Congratulations on a great find. The old girl looks to be in pretty good shape for her age. I see the tractor still has what looks like the original Sylphon large face fuel pressure gauge. Does it still have the large face Stewart-Warner temp and large face Sylphon oil pressure gauges also? Good luck in getting her back to the factory fresh look. Joe Giraud:D

Joe,
I've added a few pictures of the gauges to the album, take a look again. It looks like the Oil pressure and Water temp are still the S-W gauges. Not sure about the fuel gauge, as it's too cloudy. My guess is that it is not original based on the different style pointer. Can I buy new old style gauges for this machine?

Since the oil gauge is off-kilter, I will need to relocate it. Is that a Brass or Copper line from the rail to the gauge? Also, where can I get the line and fittings so I can do this right?

Thanks,
Sam

I looked at 5J 5 or so (I can't remember the xact #) a few yrs ago and the owner asked me how to check the oil and when we looked where the dipstick is supposed to be, it was not there for some reason. Stupid question, Does your's have one? Maybe it was broken off but with all the caked on grease nothing was visible.

Hello again Sam, The fuel pressure gauge looks to be the original factory "Sylphon" gauge which came on the machine when new. The other two gauges are later U model cat gauges. The original temp gauge was a large face beveled glass "Stewart-Warner" with an arrowhead pointing to the temp on the face dial at the top of the pointer, and at the bottom end of the pointer, a half moon design. Very hard gauge to come by. The later U model cats had almost the same gauge with the exception of a solid white line on the face dial which said "Operating Range" above the white line. This gauge was discontinued somewhere along the run of the U model cats. I'm not sure where. The oil pressure gauge was also a "Sylphon" manufactured gauge like the fuel pressure gauge;large face and beveled glass. Also very hard to find. I have a D2/3J which had the original fuel and oil pressure gauges still on it and they were both still operational. I had the face dials redone and they look great. I was able to find a used SW temp. gauge which I had rebuilt and re-calibrated. None of the work was cheap but, these gauges look 100% better than anything made later by cat. Hope the info helps. Get 5J-1 fixed up and you will have somthing to really be proud of. Joe:D

Yes, dipstick is not like the 5U (large fat handle dipstick) but rather a loop-style handle 1/4" rod dipstick. Don't have a good pic, but it's on the right side center of the engine. I'll try to get a shot when I get home this weekend (on a trip hosting a customer).

Sam, Forgot to tell you about the oil line. On my 3J the line is copper and I'm sure you can get the fittings you need at a good auto or truck parts store. You should change the position of the temp gauge from the right hole on the dash to the left hole, this way the temp gauge line will run totally along the engine block up to the left instrument hole in the dash. The oil pressure gauge mounys on the right hole in the dash. That's the way they were in my 3J when I bought it. Hope this helps. Joe:D
