Cat D2 Identification

Hi all,

This is my first post to start learning aboutthe D2 Cat. I'm looking at one to buy, it has serial number 5U-15692. I can't seem to locate anything online that helps me know what year it is.

I'm guessing '1953, but it could be newer. The 5U is the wide track with 16" tracks, 5-rollers, solid front idler, looks to have a #41 hydraulic pump behind the brush guard, PTO in the rear over the draw bar, not sure what kind of dozer blade this is? Also- I'm unsure about the clutch, is it a wet or dry one? Is there a serial number cutoff to help determine?

I assume it is the 311 diesel engine, with the gas pony motor. Not sure if its electric or not.

Any help is much apprecited, thanks!

Welcome Justin,

You should take a look at our new "Machine Page" which will give you some of the information you need. Follow link below or select the yellow "Machines" box at the top right hand of the forum page.
The Cat D2 - Antique Caterpillar Machinery Owners Club (acmoc.org)
5U 15692 was made in 1955. On the left fender is the battery box for the electric pony start. It looks to be a very nice tidy tractor. It is difficult to see from the pictures you posted, but a key question is the state (degree of wear) of the "running gear", i.e. track chains, pins and bushes, sprockets, idlers and rollers.
I'm sure others will be able to tell you if the machine has a dry or an oil clutch and the make and type of blade
I would also encourage you to join our club (from just $40 p.a.) as you will then have access to our library (see screenshot below) which has both apart catalogue and operation and maintenance instructions for your machine as well as manuals for the D311 engine which your machine uses.

Hello and welcome to the club.
This appears to be a 1955 model D2. It will have a dry over center clutch. It appears to be a very well optioned tractor. PTO, Electric start Starting engine, a tool bar dozer. It appears to be a Cat Tool bar, they idea was that you can take the blade off the front and then swing the push arms to face the rear and attach rear mounted equipment to it like a ripper for example.
Here is the link to a page with some D2 information that you can find here on our website. www.acmoc.org/about/machines/d2
The club also has an extensive library of technical information including parts manuals, service manuals, and operation manuals. If you sign up as a member of the club you get access to all of that information with your membership.
Hope that you are able to make the purchase, D2's are a fun little tractor that are pretty easy to haul around to local tractor shows.

Have Fun!!

not many were fitted with a twin spool hydraulic unit most were only single spool. this means you can have not just power raise or lower but also power angle or power tilt very handy. or even a hydraulic drag ripper or other drawn implement on the rear.

dont let it get away.
