Hi Guys,

I need help finding a Main Bearing for My 977H 53A?
The crank was cut .040 I have federal mogul bearings that were made for Cat and can only be purchased at a Cat Dealer. I was able to buy all of them except the thrust bearing part number 3533-APA-040 THIS IS ONLY THE LOWER BEARING. Does anyone know how or where I can get this bearing?

Joe, that part number is not the Cat number but must be the Federal Mogul number. Cleveland Bros. in Pa.has a used parts branch and they probably would haave some new older parts in stock to sell so their # is (724) 468-3646 and ask for Den Tressler for help. Also ask him if he could help you for a new one if he doesn,t have any in his dept.I don,t have a parts book here to look up the part number for you but tell Den what you need and I,m sure he can help.All bearings I saw for them were a set and not an lower and upper so I know Den can help.

What engine is that? I ran into problems getting the correct one piece thrust bearing for a D333, but I was needing 0.050 undersize. The aftermarket co had plenty of bearings, but the only thrust bearings they had were the separate plates that clip on a main bearing shell

We ended up cutting a counter bore in the rear cap to accept the thrust plates and that's the way it's running now. I have another cap already machined somewhere.

SJ - I'm dealing with Cleveland Brothers, but it's an aftermarket part that was made for Cat. Cat only goes .030 on their bearings.

ccjersey- I have a D333. I'm hearing that Federal Mogul quit making these thrust bearings?

Well, that's how my memory goes these days, I also had problems finding a 0.040 thrust bearing!

Here's some pictures on down in that thread. The thrust washers are retained by the crankshaft flanges on the sides and the main bearing web of the block above them.

What we did was take two caps, one off the junk block and one we wanted to use that had been line bored on the new block and bolted them together. The machine shop cut a recess in the sides of the caps to accept the thrust washers and leave the correct clearance.

This grader won't ever put in a lot of hours, but so far so good.

I think I could find the other cap around here if you wanted it.

I considered sawing the old thrust bearing sides off and installing them along with the new narrow bearing shell. It wouldn't be too different from what I ended up doing, but would require no machining. You could even buy a new one to get new unworn thrust flanges

Also possibly could have the original thrust bearing re-done.

I know it's not what you want to hear, but I have a standard crank and bearing set I could sell you! Ha! Ha!. Not funny at this point in the process.

I got a parts engine to get a lot of other stuff I needed to finish the engine, and found that it had a standard crank in the block. Sure wish I had gotten it in the beginning and not had the original crank turned. In fact I told the machine shop first off, "This crankshaft is already 0.030 under and I don't want it turned, just checked" Their response before even measuring was, "We can get the 0.040 bearings, we should turn it." But after a month of trying, no thrust bearing. GRRRR!

You're welcome to the modified cap, but it wouldn't have been line bored with your block, so ??? Not sure how much difference there might be between blocks and caps.

At the Cat dealer we used to have lots of bad or worn cranks built up and ground back to std. and we never had one failure from it.A guy from Brooklyn N.Y. did it and he came around every couple weeks and picked up any parts to repair like cylinder heads and camshafts and the crankshafts. I don,t know if he is around anymore but I believe there has been mentioned other places on here that does the same work.There was a place in Punxsutawney Pa.that used to come around to the dealer but we never dealt too much with them and don,t know the name of the Co. or if they are around anymore.I used to kid the driver when he came if he had a load of wood chucks today as that,s the town where groundhog day is celebrated each year.
