sure your wiring is all in place?, no hanging wires etc? Battery disconnect switch closed (if it has one), good ground connnection on both ends of the battery ground cable.
Just for an initial check take a test light or volt meter and make sure you have battery voltage at the regulator BAT terminal with the engine stopped. Then polarize the generator by shorting between the BAT and GEN (or ARM(ature) it's sometimes called) terminals there on the regulator. You should get just a spark, that's a good sign and enough to polarize it.
You can check the generator by shorting the F(ield) terminal to ground with it running and it should go to maximum charge/voltage output. If not, there's something wrong inside the generator. You may need to have a volt meter there on the regulator BAT or the generator ARM terminal to see the voltage if your ammeter is burned out or stuck, regulator is bad, wires are broken etc.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D
