Hi
My d6 seems under powered but no heavy black smoke I see on another question some one spoke of the governer spring this sounds like maybe my problem as I have to run it wide open all the time or it will die under the slightest of loads and when I start pushing large amouts of dirt it just starts to die without even spinning the tracks

Also was wondering if steering clutches are adjustable if so what the easiest way to do so.

Thank you Everyone on here has been so helpful

I am not sure for the black smoke its should be a bad air filter or the injectors and you need 3 inchs free movement on top control leverstering cluch and for the adjustement remove the back inspection plate and yuo will see 2 nut on top yoke, loose the lock nut and turn the big adjusting nut until you have the correct free movement.

Yes the gov. spring is a real problem causing underpower and along with it the rollers in the gov. and pins etc. get worn so it may need a complete gov. rebuild or looking at but the sprng is the first thing I,d blame it on.There is a thrust bearing on the end of the gov. weight shaft that gets worn too and they must be installed the right way too being a thrust bearing.I always liked the 5F6413 spring in them but there are two settings for the two springs and nozzles used so install the new one with the same part number as I,d imagine you don,t hve tools to set the rack travel. The other spring used was a 5F1941.

Yes they are Cat part numbers and a dealer should have them or someone on here might have one but a used one might not be any better than the one you have so new is best. Some guys claim they adjust the length of the spring by screwing the coils down tighter on the threads but you don,t know if it,s to the correct tension or not by doing that but you could try it and see if it helps by giving it a half or full turn on the thread there to start.

From my experience, I would say if the governor just won't do anything, you have more problems than just the spring!

Yellercat is the last one on here that did a governor. He found a lot of worn out parts inside and I believe still possibly has the spring issue. I thought I could find the thread for you, but it won't come up, must have been before the new board.

Last time I tried, the old board is gone for good. :(

You can contact yellercat directly if he doesn't chime in here.

The governor is pretty simple, but everything has to work properly for it to do it's job. Do you have the SRB for the D318 engine? Form number FE30238? It has a long section on the governor and repairing it.

You might start with checking it's oil level in the plug on the side of the injection pump housing. There is a drain plug in the bottom of the governor housing that drains both compartments. Also check the high idle speed. Before 9U18135 or 8U8200 the high idle speed should be 1550 rpm for 66 dbHP, and at those serial numbers, the high idle speed changes to 1750 rpm for 75 dbHP. Low idle speed is 550 rpm on all.

Looks like the governor spring is the same 5F1941 for all. The only change in the governor after 9u13263 that has to do with power that I can see was at 17698 where the torque spring assembly changed from 6F351 to 5H5834. (the spring is the same in both assy, but there's some different spacers in there.

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

CC. as I mentioned before the gov. parts wear and cause it to not open up right and wabble around in there . The rollers on the weight assemblies get flat spots on them and also on the sleeve assem that they roll around on and they tend to hang up and not function correctly.Seen this happen to a truck load of them over the years because most the older engines had about the same setup in the gov.
