Hi all !!

Now i have taken the engine from the 951 ( www.acmoc.org/ACMOC_BB/showthread.php?t=4376 ) apart. I think it's a 330c as it has a geardriven waterpump and is 7l. What differs between a 330c and 3304??

And i also wonder for how long does one have to run an engine to grind the rodbearings all away? There where no bearing left on cyl 3 and the crank is not looking good.

I just a bit curious, would a crank coming from a 3304 fit? And what prices are we talking about?

Many thanks!

It takes about 10 seconds to finish the job on a rod bearing, once the clearance gets to the critical point of not enough oil supply for the rpm/load. The original wear may occur in minutes, hours or over many years depending on the original clearance as installed and the quality of lubrication over the life of the bearing. I expect #3 is just a bit farther from the oil pump or just was unlucky and caught some debris that made it through the system somehow.

I would take the crankshaft and the connecting rods to a good machine shop and they can tell you what is available and what your options are. Chances are your crank may grind to a standard undersize, but the rod may be ruined if it got hot. If it didn't get too hot, it would be a good idea to have it checked and possibly resized and new piston pin bushings installed and honed to size. Aftermarket manufacturers frequently offer higher(lower?) undersize bearings than CAT.

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

8S3979 - 0.010"
8S3980 - 0.020"
8S3981 - 0.030"

Like I said before, many times aftemarket suppliers will offer greater undersize, perhaps up to 0.050".

Gasket sets
8S9699 basic
8S9702 supplemental
8S9705 valve grinding

Seals
Rear main 5S9022 seal only or 5S6297 seal and wear ring
Front main 5S9021 seal

LP the block is pretty much the same but the oil pump. front cover, water pump and cyl head are different on the 3304 and the 330 C.
Be sure to get the engine alignment right when you put the engine back in or the drive biscuits will rip out fast.

LP its good to hear that you are putting the effort in rebuilding the old Girl, Bobs mention of drive couplings is for the later powershift loader (951c), I would think your loader is a 63K or U.S. sister with this motor fitted (4 3/4" bore) I would think all the parts for this tractor/engine are still easy to find in the U.K. your crank I would expect to be a Knacker, look for cracks across the crank pin that has failed, (in line with the pin, not around the pin) they are a simple motor to fix and easy to work on, the Lanchester Balance shafts below the crank are easy to time as the sump plate (the flat plate ) has the lock holes in it to help set them to the crank.

According to the Cat SNID book the D330C came out in 1968 and was made till 4B4554 and then the 4B at 4555 was the 3304 engine in 1973.

Hi all..!!

Today i decided to give the engine up. It'll get to pricey for the supposed project, as i never intended to put it back into the loader.. If only the crank wasn't that bad i'd rebuild the engine.

Thank u very much ALL for all the input!! :)

When you start the spend out on parts thing it does soon build up to always more than you expected, the cost of the Crank in the U.K. is £610 for new, plus at least 1 rod would need replacing, and so on??? so I can well understand your thoughts on stopping the job as it stands, at least you had a good look inside.
