I will be going to view my gradfathers Cat 22 on Saturday and hopefully convince the current owner to sell it. It hasn't run in several years and the current owner says there are magneto problems. Any advice would be appriciated, things to look for that may be wrong that cannot be fixed, etc... Are parts still available from dealers or not? Thanks in advance for any help you may have for me.

Well, that is a good question. At the end of the day everything is fixable. I do not think many parts are still avalable from dealers, but there lots of sources for used parts. There are also several people that are reproducing parts. What you need to figure out for yourself is what kind of shape the machine is in and how much it will need to get it to the mechanical and cosmetic condition you want it to be in. Once you go take a look at it, let us know what you find. Pictures are always good. There are lots of people on here who can help you out at that point.

I just got my first Cat, it's also a Twenty Two. I had a lot of problems and no answers. These guys are great help. Between the group, they can answer almost any question and find almost any part.
What a great group!
Grab the Twenty Two and go for it. Mine's more fun than I should be allowed. It's all fun and simple. It's one of the most relaxing things I can do.
This group will take all the stress and worry out of owning and restoring a Cat.
It's been so much fun, I'm looking at a D2.

hello Peter the 22 is a 2f model ,probably about 1935 at a guess ,i don't want to put you of the 22 but it looks like it has been burnt ,by the motor looks like it wasn't a hot fire ,so it should be OK .with white metal bearings if they get to hot they can melt out ,also look like it has had yard tracks with rubber pads on them ,you will need another set of tracks or replace the rubber pads.
below is a pic of my last 22 that i worked on ,from ugly duck to a good running cat ,on my web page there are operator and parts books to down load if you need them ,

The tractor wasn't burned. It just rust. The climate here in Newfoundland is harsh and the tractor has been next to salt water for years. My father refers to the tracks as ice grousers. I have a old photo from the 30's of a 22 and it has the same kind of tracks. We are going early tomorrow morning to look at the tractor. I will get more pis then.

hello Peter ,salt will do that ,that why i thought it was burnt ,didn't look like rust as in old rain rusty ,look in parts book and seen that there are a few diff ice/snow grousers and yard pads that look much the same ,we don't get them over here in oz ,more pic and the serial number will be good so we can give a date built,bruce oz

How can you tell the difference between a 2F and a 1J and where will I find the serial number????
