Hi Guys

I'm new to the forum.
I've bought myself an old D4 Dozer. But I can't seem to find any serial numbers on it anywhere. I'm hoping that someone here might be able to help me identify what it is.

The tractor is in relatively good shape for its age, and everything seems to operate as it should.
The left track is a bit too tight, the right is a bit too loose. It looks like someone has put a spacer over the track adjustment bolt thread on the right side, they must have had some trouble trying to tighten it. its also missing the covers over the tensioning springs and a few other minor things. But overall I'm pretty happy with it so far.

Anyway here's some pictures and I'll appreciate any help you guys can give me.

looks like a 6U D4 "narrow gauge" and a bucyrus erie angle blade. or an isaacson blade

correction--- _7U D4  wide gauge_

Thanks for the info on the blade too, it needs a new cutting edge in one corner. So that will be helpful

behind the pony clutch on the block i think i see the two rivets that held the serial # plate on---clean that area off good and the # should be stamped into the block

Thats a 7U series [wide gauge] About 1947-1948 year.

Here's a few more pictures.
I haven't been able to find anything resembling a tag or cast model number anywhere. Lots of cast part numbers but thats about all.

 

Hi Team,
the rear transmission case S/No position will be hidden under the winch--we had to remove the S/No plates and rivets to fit some Hyster or other brand winches on various machines at the Dealer.
The engine S/No plate, as per your pony control side diesel engine picture, is missing and the S/No should be stamped under the plates in both locations.
There looks to be a few numbers to the left of the engine S/No position but this may be a factory block number that is usually stamped down at the block to oil pan line on the same side as the S/No plate towards the front of the engine and below the fuel injection pump.

If the engine block was a new replacement block then it would need someone to stamp the old S/No onto the block and replace the tag that is normally held on by 2 drive rivets--scrape the paint in the area shown in the scan below and see if the paint has filled the S/No stampings.

You would need to remove the winch to read the rear S/No stamping also located as per the scan below.

I'm not sure that I need to know the serial number bad enough to remove the winch at this stage.
If the general consensus is its a 7U wide gauge of late 40's vintage. Then that's probably enough information for now. 

I will have a poke around on the side of the block, but where the number is supposed to be appears to be pretty smooth.

I think those stamped numbers you can see (also the only stamped numbers I've seen anywhere) behind the throttle linkage are 2104
 

Check for stamped s/n along the block to oil pan flange.
 
 

You can get fairly close to the manufacture date by finding the casting date codes on some of the major components. Big pieces like transmission housing, final drives and engine block have date that they were cast on them.
The arrows in the picture point to the rivets where the serial number plate would have been and the block might be stamped at that location
